Commandos - Capture same battle they were created?

By Wakrob, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

Couple things about Commandos

-If you have three ground forces, roll a 10 to hit, and take one hit from the enemy. Does the new commando take that hit or can you apply it to one of the other ground forces?

-If you invade with no Commandos but end up with one in the battle, can you capture PDS and Space Docks that battle?

Thanks

Wak

First things first, you mean shock troops

2nd Question would be a "yes".

1st Question is a little more difficult and I'm not sure on the official rule. We have always played that Shock Troops are created after the "remove casualties phase" but, if we're not correct, it's a house rule we will always play with.

"If a Ground Force rolls a 10 in battle, it becomes a Shock Troop at the end of the combat round, after casualties are removed. " (SE p10)

Funky is thus playing it correctly :) They aren't Shock Troops until after the casualties are removed, and thus don't have to be taken first.

The 2nd Question is still "yes", as you complete the combat round before the invasion is truly "done", which means they will be Shock Troops in time to capture the Space Docks/PDS units.

Oddly, my last question is could I purposely kill off the Ground Force that was about to become a Shock Troop?

I was playing a game were I was trying to qualify for the Objective - Destroy another players Space Dock.

Problem was I gained a Shock Troop that battle and was forced to capture it instead, negating my chance at the Objective.

"After a successful invasion, if at least one Shock Troop unit has survived the battle (along with at least one Ground Force unit, see below), the invading player may capture enemy Space Dock and PDS units on the planet." (SE p10)

It says you may, so you can blow them up instead.

No, you can't voluntarily kill the ST first, because the GF who becomes an ST is not chosen until after casualties are removed. As Psiclone points out, however, the capturing of enemy units is optional so you can still choose to destroy the dock AND keep the ST =)
