The Split Cards have Split?

By dutpotd, in UFS General Discussion

I'm a huge fan of splits and was quite pleased to pull a High Tide from my Flames of Fame. I don't mind split attacks existing as long as the attack side isn't crazy good, because the control check should make up for it. I can pretty much guarantee I've run Echoing Roar more than anyone else.

Splits are awesome for their sheer statistical reference. An attack that has a 5 check? Yes, that would be wonderful with my Battledisc System. Should said attack also be great? Probably not. In most cases they weren't, so they were pretty well balanced. Obviously, Clones was a big exception.

Also when I think of an attack as being a split I only really consider those with a check of 4 or higher. If I wanted to run a 3 check attack, there's plenty of better options. Long story short, I'd love to see more high check split attacks IF there continue to be abilities that reference them. i.e. tNCG or Tricky Basket or Repetant Hero, etc.

how could you guys forget about clones, the best split eva

Yes, there are probably a good 20 or so you could name that were played for both sides regularly... but that's out of over 200. Even putting that aside, there's still the fact that they are a rules headache (even if most forum folk have a handle on it, that doesn't mean the general playerbase does, not to mention prospective new players) and a design nightmare - not just of the cards themselves, but also for every single other card that ever references a card type or keyword in an out of play zone. Plus now that blocking is relevant again, any time a card really needs a secondary purpose it can be given a good block or a simple second ability. And with the number of cards each character gets in their support, splits aren't needed to fill holes. Sure, well-designed splits can be cool, but that alone isn't enough to justify the problems they bring.

Wait, so what you're saying is, there are bad cards?

Dude, stop the presses.

Haha, did you not see the post above yours? gran_risa.gif

While I agree with ROFLcopter, er Wafflecopter that clones was "too good", I still think there's worse balanced cards out there (Ira-Spinta, Feline Spike, etc.). But yes, for the time it came out, it was one of the best attacks you could pack. The true power of it was that even though it could be blocked easily it's very low difficulty for the payoff and the control will never burn you. Well, unless your opponent blocked with Burning Knuckle. sorpresa.gif
