Newbie question

By joe90bigrat90, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi i just received my arkham horror game today and wow what a lot of rules. Quite a complex game but i need some help with something so hopefully you advanced players can help me.

During the movement phase do all players move in the movement phase. I mean the first player moves and then goes onto next phase and when all phases are over at the end of the turn the next player moves. I dont think it works like that but i figure that the first player moves first in the movement phase and then the next player moves and once everyone moves then it goes onto the next phase. Am I correct?

Also are you allowed in arkham horror to not move and stay in 1 location for as long as you like?

Im gonna have my first game soon with a mate and see how we get on with it.

Looks fun but just trying to remember all those god **** rules lol

Thanks for your help with this one.

Cheers

Joe

Your interpretation is correct. Each phase is completed by every player in order, then the next phase starts.

"During each phase, every player, starting with the
first player and continuing clockwise, performs the
actions that take place during that phase. Once all
players have completed a phase, the next phase begins." (p. 5)

Very clearly put, black on white, err, light green. Mythos phase is the only one where you get just 1 "action", so first player draws and resolves a Mythos card, not one for each player.

You can, but there is rarely any reason to do so. If you return to Arkham and fail to close the gate, you probably want to stick around and try again next turn. You can also camp for Retainers, but generally speaking, sitting isn't beneficial most of the time. IMO of course.

ahhhh ok thanks a lot guys. So if you dont have to move in arkham horror i can just stay at st marys hospital all the time gaining free stamina? is this correct?

Quit being a cheap-skate and pay the $2 to get yourself back to full gran_risa.gif ! There is a world to be saved, you can hit on the nurses after you save the world cool.gif .

Dam, we've been over this. Stop terrorizing the rookies. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Don't mind Dam, Joe90bigrat90. He's been here a long time, so he knows just about everything. It's just that he KNOWS that he knows just about everything, so he can be as blunt and direct as a brick to the head. gran_risa.gif

You may choose not to move during your Movement Phase. Perhaps you'd rather use your movement points to read a Tome, or there's something extremely Dhole-ish waiting outside in your Street you'd rather not see up close. Or, as you said, you're broke and your Stamina or Sanity is down around your ankles. Hang out as long as you'd like. But, as Dam said (or tried to say in his inimitable Dam-y way), Arkham Horror can be very unforgiving if you allow the game to progress without doing anything. Leave it alone for too long, and it will eat your cat.

Hey, brick to the head is a proven method. Just for what though is another matter gui%C3%B1o.gif .

ok thankyou very much guys. But this does seem a bit strange to me. In a 3 player game that works well but for a 2 player game it seems weird. So im the first player yeah and i take my movement and have combat etc (if any monsters in play and i interact with them). Then my mate moves and has combat if he so chooses. End of phase and onto next phase until end of turn. Now i give first player marker to my mate. He now moves and then i move but this means that he gets to move twice (once at end of movement phase with me being first player and moves again when he is first player. So in a 2 player game you get to move in theory two times. This is correct yeah??? Thanks.

Turn 1: Investigators A & B

Movement: Investigator A (is First Player)

Movement Inv B

Arkham Encounter: Inv A

AE: Inv B

and so on, at the end of the turn, Inv B becomes First Player

Turn 2:

Movement: Inv B

Movement: Inv A

AE: Inv B

AE: Inv A

I don't see any moving twice, unless you mean the order of movement, which is ABBA (see what did there lengua.gif ), but if you were to look at the order of movement in turns 2 and 3, it would be BAAB.

I whole heartedly second the fact that you don't have the luxury of hanging around anywhere for a minute.

I've only just started playing, and although it isn't neccessarily obvious from reading the rules it quickly becomes apparent when playing the game that the investigators simply don't have enough time to do all the things they want to do.

It pretty much comes down to the fact that until you start getting some seals down (and even this isn't a sure fire method once you add in some gate bursts), then its pretty likely for a gate to be appearing every round. Considering it normally takes an investigator 2 rounds to get through the OW and back to be able to close/seal the gate, the number of gates will simply increase quicker than you can close them (unless you are playing with a high number of inv; i generally get the impression this makes the game a bit easier, but I've never played with more than 4 and normally play with 3)

obviously seals, monster surges and mythos cards that don't release gates all "help" in their own way of keeping the total number of gates down, but in my last couple of games (since adding dunwich, which may well have exasparated the problem) i have had 9 or so gates arrive in nine different locations(althougth only 1 or 2 in dunwich), add to that, that some of them have come about during encounters and sucked investigators through and delayed them and a couple of LiTaS encounters while in the OW, and even with a few successful gates closures, the number of open gates can reach 7 before you know it (or whatever number is needed for your number of invs)

I might switch to playing 4 solo, now i have a better handle on the game, giving me an extra "go" per turn might help a bit!

who am i trying to kid?

Ah I missed you guys. After a sloppy apartment move and wacky utilities shenanigans, I've been mostly without internet for almost two weeks.
