Planning on buying a full set of wave 1, plus another set of ships that are not in the core set (i.e. Both Squadrons, Assault Frigate, and Gladiator)

The reason I am making sure to get a set of wave 1 ships is in case they include any unique Equipment cards that are not in the Core

I broke down last week and picked up a second core too. :/ I really like the game, and wanted to be able to start full games. The half games were just missing something. Not like they weren't fun, just not fulfilling enough some how. After some research I figured out it's not actually a bad investment as you basically break even over individual expansion packs which wont be available till Q3(iirc) now anyway. Plus, there are three title cards total for each ship in the core, so 2 cores and one of each expansion gets you a full named set. And an extra Gladiator and Assault Ship gets you a full playset for all intents and purposes. A second fighter pack might not be a bad idea but not sure a third is really needed.

If bought individually, the Maneuver tool, Dice, and pieces/cards individually all together would still run you about the same. Interesting to note though, this game will be fairly easy to enter into even without buying the core set when the expansions are out. As long as you play with someone who can provide the obstacle tokens. The ruler can actually be replicated if need be. Rather exciting for future comers to the hobby.

Even in 400 points, you could easily play 3 vsd.

So far I still think that getting two cores isn't the best idea, unless you have someone to sell some of the stuff to.

You get less miniatures for the price, you miss upgrades and cards for the ships and there's a chance you might need multiples of those from expansions (like Predator or PTL in X-Wing). You don't get all the various fighters, just x-wings and TIEs, so you will need to buy fighter packs anyway.

I personally decided to get one starter set, 1 of everything from the core set as expansions and then 2 of everything else with possibility of getting more stuff later. That way I'd have this:

2x Victory, one from expansion for additional cards 'n stuff
2x Nebulon, same as above

2x CR90, same as above

2x Gladiator (considered getting 3 just because I love the model, but not sure if I will like the way it plays)

2x Assault Frigate Mk.2 to be able to field heavier lists for glorious slugfests (and I dig the model)

1x basic fighters for both factions from the core

2x imperial fighter pack

2x rebel fighter pack (just to be able to field more of the non-regular fighters, should I want to try some fancy list)

This should give me a fine toolbox for small, competitive 300pt fleets AND enough ships to play bigger, fun battles. Also provides some insight on how stuff plays before I spend even more on additional ships.

Funny though, after playing the core, I think I actually like Rebels play style better. Imp style seems kind of ... straightforward. Just try and get them in the forward arc, muck up the ties. Blast stuff with the heavy firepower... ehh..

Isn't Victory + 2 gladiators and some fighters already 300 pts? With the models you listed you probably will be able to field 500pt fleets if not more - remember about upgrade cards, objective costs and commanders that add to the point count!

As for hemorrhage... Years of both Warhammers make you a monster in your wallet's eyes anyway.

That's why I'll focus on one fleet versus both and pick up the second at low points of gaming purchases.

Not sure when that will be with the WarmaHordes, Armada, Imp Assault cycle......

I was thinking about buying a second core set but the price of $135-$145 is putting me off a bit.

I've decided to wait and buy one of each unit in Wave 1 and and extra pack of dice and enough movement tools to make a Speed1, Speed2 and Speed3 tool.

Once I have those I will decide on which units I want more of.

I want to buy a second core set, but only because I have the game crazy on my brain. It just does not make sense to me to get a second in my opinion. You will still want all the individual ship expansion packs and everything.

I resisted the immediate opportunity to pick up a second core this afternoon at 20% off. (It was a slightly damaged box from the drunk-driver incident last week, that I mentioned elsewhere.) Instead, I'm hoping that the 20% discounted box will induce someone else to get into the game.

Also, while I do think extra copies of all the doo-dads that comes with another core set (dice, tokens, range ruler, etc.), there is not a lot of diversity that comes in the core set, and I don't think I'll want a 3rd Victory, and I intend to play rebels on rare occasions only. (As the editor of HNN I have a reputation for faction purity to uphold.)

Thanks for your moral support. I do have all the Imperial Wave 1 goodness (and a set of dice) on pre-order already. Also, a good number of people also have core sets, so most times we'll have enough stuff to play 300pnt games. So, there really is not much of a point to getting more core.

Because just the game says that 400 points is the standard size doesn't mean, that you can't play bigger games casually.

Even in 400 points, you could easily play 3 vsd.

My thinking was to wait until wave 2 comes out, then with the increased base points grab another base set for the models as well as the dice/template/etc.

Having a speed 2 movement tool is incredibly helpful... To the point that you are crazy if you don't get one. It saves you so much removal and replacement of fighters. (If you don't have one it is almost worthwhile to just use a cardboard token)

Also being able to play 300 point games now with a full dice set is quite nice.

So I gather a second core set for retail price isn't really worth it but at what price would you consider it. Is $60 fora core set a good enough deal to get you to buy another one.
