Noob questions

By JacknifeUK, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi guys

Noob here just getting in to the game. Couple of questions from my early set of games. Outrider title, is the cannon still considered a secondary weapon dispite replacing the primary weapon. ie does a defender get an extra green dice against it at range 3 from an HLC or not. If a critical hit damages a secondary weapon, does it count against the cannon?

As Connor Jax stops focus tokens and actions, does he stop proton rockets being used too?

Outrider Title: Yes, it's still a secondary weapon. It's still an Upgrade Title with the "Attack" header.
In the event of a Munitions Failure crit, you discard the Cannon, but get to use your actual primary again.

Carnor Jax: Yes, and Blaster Turrets as well. He's naesty.

Wait a second. Doesn't a Proton Rocket just require having a Focus without requiring you to SPEND the Focus which Jax can prevent? Doesn't it work like Ion Pulse in that you need X to perform the attack but while you discard the attack card you don't need to do anything with X to make the attack? If so I guess I've never looked at it that way.

Whoops, you're right.

If you HAVE a focus token, you can still fire the Prockets.

Carnor just prevents the taking of the action or the spending of the token. My b.

Thanks Guys, that is just the conversation I was having with myself about it. Jax successfully barrel rolled into range one of my Outrider and A wing, which already were focused. Really wanted to throw 5 dice at him, but only threw 3 as I was totally unsure what the right answer was.

Nothing about Jax prevents a ship from HAVING a Focus token; just spending it, which is NOT required for the Procket, or taking the action that normally gives you one.

Just be warned that getting inside the HLC donut hole of the Outrider you may not want to see a Munitions Failure card show up; it can discard the cannon which negates Outrider and then allows the YT-2400 to shoot at you with it's primary weapon which you are now conveniently at R1 for.

Secondary weapons don't get the range bonus dice.

You dont really want to roll unmodified ordinance though each die has a 50% chance to hit so even with five dice your not gonna hit that hard you want to be able to spend that focus :)

Welcome to the game.

Yeah, had a funny moment with myself when I realised that PR were a focus attack rather than target lock and you don't spend the focus to use them.

Thanks for the outrider advice, been thinking about a FastDash set up and was wondering if there was a way to counter the donut of the HLC, was considering a Proton rockets/Countermeasures combo, but I don't think it is cost effective. Maybe the Mangler cannon is the way forward, but haven't got one yet.

If your after a three attack turret ship go falcon, you'll get the same kind of damage but have more options.

Heavy laser cannon is not cheap but it hits hard, use barrel roll to keep your distance and maybe push the limit so you can also focus.

where is the rule for NOT spending a Focus Token to fire the Proton Rockets?? I was in a tournament this past weekend and my opponent got very animated when I told him about it, but I couldnt remember where it was located...

Its not a rule exactly. The card doesn't say to spend the token. Look at other missiles/torpedoes say to spend the token. Its a matter of do what the card says not what you think it should say.

Exactly, the rule in this case is the golden rule, listed in my sig.

Do what the card says to do, don't do what it doesn't say to do.

Nothing on the card says 'spend a focus token' it only says you must have one.

The only other ordinance that is similar is homing missiles and ion pulse missiles. They require a TL, but do not force you to spend it to make the attack. Proton rockets are unique that they only require you to have a focus (and not spend it)
