FILM WING! Playing to the 'max'

By Gadge, in X-Wing

I had a really good game the other day but thought...most games hardly see ships fitted out like the movies.

So my friend Mark and I thought an interesting variant to play the game by would be one where you *had* to take the upgrades present in the movies or the tech specs in games.

So for example all Xwings have to take an astromech and proton torpedos

Defenders *have* to take ion cannons

Y wings *have* to take ICT turrets, mechs and ordinance.

You'd clearly have to ramp up a 100 point game to more like 200 points but I think it would be interesting to see how the rules held up when ships were equipped as they should be, personally i think it would make a more *varied* game but you'd also have a lot of unused ordnance!

Views?

I guess the only potential problem would be what do you consider the canon load-out for each ship? For example does the FFG RPG trump the WEG version of there is a conflict between them or could you choose which you want to use.

Better yet, what if you just fully loaded things with no regard for points? Just go nuts.

I've always thought that would be a cool thing to do. E-WIngs would have to take R7 'mechs, the named droids could only go with the appropriate pilot...and Threepio could still be with Fat Han. Ah well, can't win 'em all. ^_^ One problem comes to mind immediately, though: the A/SF-01 B-Wing.

Set Primary Weapon value to '0' (as they didn't have any standard laser cannons), add two more Cannon upgrade slots. :P Take HLC, Ion, Autoblaster, a full load of Proton Torps, and FCS. Probably Munitions Failsafe, too, because B-Wings don't run out of torpedoes easily.

Definitely a good way to add some theme to the game - maybe drop the price of ordnance by a point so the Rebels aren't too hamstrung by their ordnance obligation

As a Y-wing fan I would point out that pretty much any configuration of turret and/or title would be permissible as both A4 and S3 variants were common for the Rebels.

i think id use the old 'essential guide to starships' as its pretty comprehensive and less than £/$ 5 on ebay or amazon

Its also occured to me that at the moment the Xwing is 'underplayed'

With 'compulsory upgrades' it would make the B wing less of an auto choice over the xwing as while the bwing would be utterly devastating tricked out with cannons, ordnance and systems it would be twice the cost of a proton armed xwing with a cheap R2

Certainly more in keeping with the film.

TIEs would also *really* be swarm ships unless you were running royal guard who would *have* to take shield upgrades.

I think im going to try this next time i've got a free sunday.

What about EPTs? Deadeye on Luke is a no brainer, but what do you put on Fel, Wedge, Boba, etc? Also for the full film experience something would need to be done about the effectiveness of generics against named pilots. -1 red die when a generic attacks a named and -1 green when a generic defends against a named would probably do the trick.

You could get away without full torpedo loads in most cases - only a handful of the pilots had them at Yavin, and torpedoes were in constant short supply throughout the Rebellion. It's not something we really see, as most of the novels feature the well-known squadrons who would have higher priority for logistics, but it was still an issue.

Alleviating the shortage of torps was even an issue for the Rebels all the way out to 13ABY, as it is mentioned as the main strategic reason for wooing Adumar with its ordnance production facilities.

another fun house rule would be to add a BTL-S3 title to the wishbone which adds a crew slot for dedicated y-wing only gunners - I did a thread on it a while back but for some reason I can't paste the link

My choice for Boba would be Lone Wolf. For the others I'm not sure what they would take.

Tie Fighters and Interceptors will also obliterate everything because these rules don't nerf them as much as ships with multiple upgrade slots. They might have to take EPT's and modifications which are pretty good on those ships anyway.

Another good reason to rebalance generics against named pilots.

Kudos for the 'Sisters' signature Major Tom!

I actually love the idea of compulsory upgrades for the X-Wing. That makes it an inexpensive alternative to the B-Wing. pay the premium for barrel rolls, or don't.

B-wings would need an extra cannon slot for Autoblasters and Ion Cannons. That thing had a LOT of guns.

Yeah if you tried this out as rules then a B wing really becomes what its supposed to be, a really heavy fighter capable of taking on light capital ships.

The xwing then becomes a space superiority fighter.

Film X-wing

Proton Torpedos. Any r-2 or dome shape astromech (but no r-7), ept if avalible

Film Y-wing

BTL-A4 title Ion Cannon, Any R-5 astromech, 2x proton torpedoes.

Film Tie Fighter

Bare

Film Trench Tie Fighter

Modification Targeting computer (okay more like a Tie Fighter PC game mission with Darth Vader)

Film Tie Advance

No missiles (none were fired)

Film Tie Bomber

Proton Bombs, maybe concussion missiles

Film A-wing

Concussion Missiles or refit, A-wing test pilot + PTL

Film B-wing
