A regional event max player 16?

By Krynn007, in X-Wing

So I just called the store that is having the regionals in my area to ask about Pre registration (been curious since I'm seeing posts of pre-registration in others areas that is taking place around the same time) and how many people they can fit in

So she told me that there is no Pre registration

I asked where it's being located.

At the store she said

How many can fit in?

She puts me on hold and comes back and says 16

Really? 16?

I mentioned that there is a lot of interest and people from Halifax, Moncton, Pei, and possibly Maine will be looking to go, and that's not including possibly some from Quebec which I heard and the area where it's being held

She didn't seem to care, and that was pretty well it. It sounded that they have no interest on getting a bigger spot.

I asked if they had considered renting a place and she said no

There have been probably at least 6-8 store championship in area, so half will be players with regional byes?

Or. Imagine the place fills up, and someone arrives with a bye and gets turned awa.

Or would they ask a player who already paid and register that they have to leave?

I don't know, but I'm pretty disappointed

The store in moncton at least can hold 24, and they tried to get the regional but this other place got it.

Has there ever been a regional event so small?

Anyway she said to call back in couple days and I can talk to the manager then

Not sure what that'll do

Edit

Ok well I just heard from some one and I guess someone is renting a space

You should probably contact FFG's customer service and organized play department and report them. That is not acceptable, for all the reasons you listed.

Where is this place? Can you PM it to me if you don't want it to be public?

What would that do?

They likely have the kit by now

Worst thing is they don't get it next year

I doubt ffg will kindly ask them to return it.

Do you live in Canada? If so FFG had no hand in picking stores to run events. It's one of your distributors that does so.

You'd be surprised what the power of the internet can do... There is a huge X-wing community throughout the world. Even though this regional isn't in my backyard this displeases me, and probably most players who read these boards.

Many players have a hard enough time finding nearby regionals without being told there is such a ridiculously low cap. I have a choice of 4 regionals that are each about 4 hours away, and I'm luckier than people from northern Canada or probably several other countries. To have a regional option taken away because of a 16 player cap is disrespectful to players who love this game.

Our local store tried really hard to get a regional. They purchased enough star mats for like 128 people, worked out the arrangements of the space, ran regular tournaments to become familiar with the rules, etc., as I'm sure many stores did. This is disrespectful to the stores that worked hard and didn't get a regional.

A store shouldn't be hosting a regional if they can only accommodate 16 players. FFG should be made aware if it was a US store so they know not to send the regional to that location next year. If it is Canada then the distributor should be made aware so that they don't send the regional there next year, or if they are buddy buddy with that store FFG should take away their distributorship.

That said, if nobody knows which regional this is, the chances of something being done about go from about 1% to a definite zero.

It is possible the employee on shift didn't know what they were talking about, I'll hope for your sake that is the case and when you talk to the manager they have a better story.

So far of the regionals I've talked to, Pennsylvania says they have room for up to 128 though they don't anticipate nearly that many. Toronto has said they have capacity for 50. I've heard the Chicago (Niles) one should have no trouble finding room for 128. I mean if only 16 show up for a regional in North Dakota or central Canada then so be it, but to have a hard cap of 16 is crazy.

Sounds like it.

One thing seems clear to me over the past few days given Regional discussions: this game has grown a LOT more than I thought it had.

It also sounds like FFG may need to improve their vetting process for who gets Regionals (and also make sure the distributors do their due diligence outside the US).

Regionals are supposed to be a big deal. I understand wanting to spread things around and let different stores have a chance but at the same time I think it's more important to award them to stores that can run these events properly. I'm getting a bad feeling that too many are going to be in over their heads, not know how to run the events smoothly, don't have enough space, etc.

I couldn't agree more. FFGs own allocation and scheduling habits across all of thier games is pretty **** terrible.

And for good measure, you can email Alex Davy directly at [email protected]

Also, if you are on any local X-Wing FB groups or social media groups, be sure to make a big stink about it there. Make sure everyone in your area knows that only 16 people get to play in Regionals, and tell them to do something about it. FFG has shown that if enough players get angry enough, they will do their best to fix whatever is making them angry.

Let's take a step back from all this "REPORT THEM!"

many times you can call a store and the employee who answers does not have the information you require or gives incorrect information. I would email the store or talk to them on facebook...get the information in writing before going off half-cocked.
I am sure FFG is very clear in it's information about regionals and it is clear that they will be larger than the normal seaasonal tournament.

so: email them or FB them...they may have mixed up the spring tournament with the regional...or with something else entirely.

My opinion is that a Store willing to host a Store tournament should have at least a number of space available equal to the number of promo card coming with the kit: 32 for Store Championship, 64 for Regionals.

Under that number, especially at Regional level where there is so few of them, I would give the kit to another store. There is only 7 store running a Regional in Canada, that one of those is limited to only 16 is ridiculous and in no way encouraging the game to grow.

Make sure you call back and talk to the organizer / store owner. The person on the phone may have just been mistaken, for any number of reasons, or may not have known exactly which even you were talking about.

If you talk to the TO / owner and they still have the same answer & devil may care attitude, ten by all means talk to FFG and/or the distributor for your area. They (probably) won't like that kind of situation any more than you.

What would that do?

Even if so, that'd at least mean it'll be better next year. No reason NOT to make a call/shoot an email, right?

Not fixing something right now doesn't mean there's no reason not to try and fix something.

Edited original post

Ok well I just heard from some one and I guess someone is renting a space

Good deal, consider pitch fork put away. Hidastom's comment about verifying first is the MVP of this thread. Good to hear they'll have room for more than 16.

So what are they going to do with the rest of the 64 player prize support in the tournament kit. Does it not say in the TO packet they have to host at least 64?

Edit: didn't see most recent post. Never mind.

I will take FFG and all of its woes over WizKids allocation, scheduling, rules and OP events every time.

Every time!

Seriously.
