Whats better? X wing or Armada?

By Azorius16, in Star Wars: Armada

I was curious to know if Armada will become the new flagship game for fantasy flight or x wing will stay on top. Or will they both share success. Just curious.

Personally, Armada is better to me because of the larger scale, pre-measuring, and simple squadron rules.

This!

To me Armada seems more polished.

Obviously asking that in this forum most will say Armada and vice versa over in X-Wing. They are different enough I think they can both fulfill a different gaming niche.

you'll have to define "better"

both games have their perks, which are going to hard to effectively compare and contrast because x-wing is so much further along and Armada still has that new shininess. the fact that they're two completely different games doesn't help matters

still, I do prefer Armada for its

objective-based gameplay

scope of the battle (capital ships :D!)

reduced impact of dice (my namesake is absent)

increased impact of player decision

*defense token

*accuracy results

*commands and a command queue etc.

*objectives versus attrition

*just more decisions to be made in general

and, best of all, no scum sucking turrets

yeah everything has essentially 360 degree fire options, but either the arcs matter (different dice values) and/or the range matters (dice again + prohibitively short range of squadrons emphasis positioning) so your decisions are important and not compensated for

still playing X-wing, though. it's an incredible game when no one puts a fattie on the table

Please tell me X-Wing is better. I'm already invested in X-Wing. Not another living game that is good  Nooooooooo

Neither....

Both are great games in their own right.

Each, while having similarities are different games that play out differently. Both are very fun to play!

At least that's my opinion :)

X-Wing is better. Spend the rest of your surplus money on your loved ones and/or a charity you like.

Apples to oranges. X-Wing and Armada fill different niches and have different styles of play.

Yeah both are down right awesome, ive spent easily $400 on x-wing, granted sold a bunch of my rebel stuff so i can hope into armada, but really armada is what I guess I have really been wanting since I got to see X-wing

The bigger scale allows for some smaller mistakes, (a decloaked phantom that ended up in the wrong spot) but also a wider strategy once you are on the board with your fleet, I'm just really excited about it all. That and I cant see x-wing expanding too much further just because of the lack of ships, still a really fun game, but I've been hyped for armada since Gen Con

Better and Flagship game are two completely different things.

But I doubt that Armada will become more popular then X-Wing for a couple reasons.

The scale is larger, and requires more room.

The cost is higher, and is higher per model.

The game takes longer to play.

The game is deeper, requiring more thought and planning.

I know that last one may seem like a net plus for Armada, but it means the game is less casual friendly and that means less popular generally speaking.

None of that makes Armada worse, but you can't really compare the two games directly in the first place.

I play both.

At the moment I like X-Wing better. (due to lack of choice in armada)

Eventually I expect Armada to grow to be an equal (in fun) but very different...

like others have stated, it really boils down to preference

X-wing is nice because it's quick and for competitive games, X-wing won't drain you after a couple of games

I personally believe it's too early to be asking this question though. Armada is brand new and it's going to take some time along with more releases for it to truly shine into the game it's supposed to be, where as X-wing is there already

i stated in another thread that Armada is really exciting because it's something new. only after a year or two has passed will you truly be able to judge which you like better. Right now i am liking Armada more because X-wing is in a place i don't enjoy, which is a 2 ship super build meta, which has fallen far from its initial multi ship play averaging at least 3-5 ships per side

but depending on where the x-wing meta goes in the next year, Armada may or may not be my favorite past time

Apples to oranges. X-Wing and Armada fill different niches and have different styles of play.

This. They are in the same universe as Star Wars, but Armada is a completely different game than X-wing. I was actually surprised how different it actually plays out. There is a lot more long term strategy in Armada. In X-wing you are only concerned at most 1 or 2 turns out. In Armada you have to take into account all 6 turns. Dice are also a little less of a factor. Yeah, you can still blank your attack roll and be screwed, but you don't have as many situations determined by just dice. Everyone has had one of those X-wing games where you set yourself up perfectly, got your opponent in a trap, and the dice just completely **** you. That's going to happen less in Armada as only one side is rolling dice during an attack.

I Love Star Wars so for me, it simply has to be BOTH.

I'm also thinking of getting Imperial Assault.

I'll be living off Kraft Dinner for a while!!!

Both are great and have there own individual merits and fill a different void for me game play wise.

To be honest I play Armada, X-wing and the LCG and love the unique play style of all compared to everything in there markets and that's before you add the fact its freek'in Star wars.

I just hope that FFG don't get the Idea of boarding actions with sneeky jedi on ISD's! Who am I kidding I'd love it :D

There are reasons there are lots of different games out there. People like all sorts of different kinds of games. I am not a huge fan of X-Wing, but I think it is a cool game. Armada is the kind of game that I like to play, and it is a cool game.

Imperial assault is really fun. Granted, I haven't played descent, so the experience was new to me. I don't regret the expenditure at all and am quite happy I got it.

Discussed in this thread

I really won't make a verdict until after Wave 2

But for me the scale and gameplay is so much better, much more Strategic and tactical.

Armada is also going to work really well with the RPG.

I own them all and play the LCG competitively. So much Star Wars so much awesome

Silence infidel! The dark side must grow.

Give yourself to the dark side of Armada! It is your destiny.

I have all three and love all three.

I did buy heavily into Descent, which Imperial Assault is almost identical to in game-play. But Imperial Assault is more polished and seems to have learned some lessons from what they did with Descent. It's a more refined experience of the Descent game type. And it's Star Wars, so hooooray!

And there's nothing wrong with a ramen noodle diet! :P

Different games, but for what i am looking for Armada is better.

Bigger scale, i love squadron/capital ship interactions.

More deep strategic thinking and understanding.

Better and more balanced game objectives.

Better tournament score system.

I too tend to favor Armada. It's more my pace.

I love X-Wing, but am rubbish at it. It's pace dictates a more "fly by the seat of your pants" style that I have trouble using. I tend to make poor snap decisions in it.

But Armada gives me more time to analyze the board and make good decisions because of the durability of the capital ships, and the game mechanics (especially the brilliant command dial mechanism).

And I have always loved the big-ship battles in sci-fi. (I'm looking at you too Babylon 5 and Star Trek  )

There's a reason I read the Honor Harrington books.

if you need to roll at a slower pace, bring out some B-wings :P

the one thing I don't like about Armada is that the B-wing squadrons don't seem nearly as awesome as the individual fighters in X-wing miniatures (or in Empire @ War, because holy **** those things would rip Victories apart faster than Vader throttles incompetent officers), though I understand the Squadron versus individual starfighter dynamics more than justify the differences (just in case "completely different game systems" did not :P)

From a game mechanics standpoint I think Armada is much more refined. Removing the defense dice makes the game more streamlined, less erratic, and provides interesting tactical choices for the player. Making the attack dice more consistent and having tons of abilities to reroll or swap faces makes luck much less prevalent.

I also agree that the meta has become unappealing in XWM. In my mind, X-Wing is a dogfighting game... flying tanks with turrets doesn't seem like dogfighting to me. I will still probably collect one of each ship when they go on sale, because I am a Star Wars junkie, but I imagine anytime in the future that I am playing XWM, I'll be thinking about Armada.
