Starting out.

By smellyshoe, in Dark Heresy

Hi,

I'm very new to RPG's. I really like the look of this game.

What books do I need to start playing?

Thanks for your help.

Well, the only book you NEED to have for playing is the Core Rulebook. Afterwards, when you get used to the ruleset, I'd definitely recommend the Inquisitor's Handbook next. After that, it's really up to you and what you want.

Indeed, the Core rulebook is what you want to get first. Once you've read that you can consider getting other books, but that's all you need. I would recommend you download the latest errata, though, since it clarifies many of the rules in the core book and makes some welcomed changes as well.

The main book followed by Creatures. If money is tight you could have a player buy Inquisitor's Handbook as it's more a player's hand book any way. But as people have said all you need is the main book.

Core rulebook is all you really need, the rest is a luxury.

In a moment of heretical madness against the overwhelming opinion on the boards I find the IH to be pretty superficial. 50 different versions of the same gun with a couple of digits between each stat, my group hardly even look at it.

I was thinking more for the advanced character creation!

Let's not forget contacts. My players have found that very useful.

I've been running a DH game for months now (about to swap places with a Player to try the other side of the 'wall') with just the core book.

To be honest I've never given any thought to picking up any other books. The core book gives us all we need and the stupid cost for new books means I've better things to spend my money on.

Unlike many games where you really need more books to make the game work, for DH the core book seems more than enough.

Of course we're still in the early stages of character progression so perhaps at higher ranks things are different. :D

Really, to play you don't need anything... as long as at least the GM has the rulebook, anyone else owning it is optional.
