A Scout In Need of Help

By TheBat, in UFS General Discussion

Tomorrow is the first time I report a tournament on the new site. There are a few fields that I am not sure how to fill out.

Location, Information, Sos (someone has already tried to explain this one to me, but it didn't sink in), and Rating.

If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated! gran_risa.gif

Anybody? Could really use some help.

I wasnt even aware that we were supposed to report with the new system yet did paul make an announcement?

isn't that something we have to do for like... the past 3 years?

Yeah we have to use the new site now. That is why we registered Dec. tournaments on the new site. So...any anwsers to my question?

We have the new site but not new software for tournaments thats what I thought we were waiting for since ever since GRT starting screwing up we havent been reporting .

Bat - I'm at work, and am fairly swamped. Be patient, and I'll do my best to get a full explanation to all of your questions up by EOD Tuesday.

Awesome! Thanks!!!!

Ok, totally off subject, but how do I edit post?

You cannot after 5 minutes.

After we post? Then how are we suppose to edit our trade forums?

this is something web designers are looking into (as pm system too)

Awesome! Any idea how long it will take? Or is this going to be like the tournament software, just a hope away?

PM's / Message Edits are towards the end of the year, beginning of next year is the ETA I got from Paul when we discussed it before the thanksgivingday break.

Ok, well I think I have an idea on how to keep my trades up to date until then.

Please tell me the new Tournament Program is working

Nope, that is why I am waiting for Antigoth to post the information I need to fill in some sections of the tournament report on the new site.

Even if we have Antigoth trouble shoot it shouldn't we have the new OP software? If we are being asked to report with the new website or will reporting not sync with the new software ?

So far it looks likes we have to manually report it on the new site. That is why I made this post because I don't know how to fill in some of the required fields.

With Props to Retched who posted this first on the old FFG Site:

~~~
Rating = Final amount of swiss points
SOS = Strength of Schedule (use the old GRT tiebreaker way: add up the total scores of all a player's opponents, dropping the lowest)
Information = Character used (no versions or else you will get a blank screen)
Location = Zipcode of the player (or Postal Code)
Results should be entered in order of the final standings.
~~~

Here are my notes:

1) The tournament software currently will not let you "upload" the results, nor will it allow you to copy and paste over the results.

2) Here is the one tournament that I've entered so you can have something to reference:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/orgplay/admin/tournaments.jsp?ACTION=EDIT&tournamentid=185

3) Location can be entered either as Zip (American) Postal (Everywhere else) or just the Name of the city.

4) Result:

Needs to be formalized and documented by FFG, Paul and I are currently discussing this in email (I really have to email him back on this actually)
In the software "Result" can either be simply entered by placing W or L, or... you can add a number.
That number can be any number that you want. So for example, if you wanted to record a 2-1 win, you could enter 6 for player 1, and 3 for player 2.

In reality the current scoring matrix that was being used:

W = 3 Points
Draw = 1 Point
Loss = 0 Points

So based on this matrix, your first place person who wins all 3 rounds without a loss would be 9 points.
Second with 3 wins would be 6 points
Third would be 1 win with 3 points
Fourth place would be 0 wins, and 0 points.

5) SoS - Strength of Opponents schedule
Retched mentions dropping the worst opponent from the SOS. Personally I've always done SOS as including all schedules you faced, including the worst. What matters most is that you use the same method for calculating each players SOS.

Using the point values from the example given in #4, here is how you would do an SOS calculation:

Rnd 1:
Player 1 Vs Player 2 - 1 Wins
Player 3 Vs Player 4 - 3 Wins

Player 1 has a 0 SOS, and 3 Result points
Player 2 has a 3 SOS, and 0 Result points
Player 3 has a 0 SOS, and 3 Result points
Player 4 has a 3 SOS, and 0 Result Points

Rnd 2:

Player 1 V Player 3 - 1 Wins
Player 2 V Player 4 - 2 Wins

Player 1 has a 6 SOS, and 6 Result Points (Player 2 is now worth 3 points, player 3 is still worth 3 points)
Player 2 has a 6 SOS, and 3 Result Points (Player 1 is now worth 6 points, player 4 is still worth 0 points)
Player 3 has a 6 SOS, and 3 Result Points (Player 4 is still worth 0 points, Player 1 is now worth 6 points)
Player 4 has a 6 SOS, and 0 Result Points (Player 3 is still worth 3 points, player 2 is now worth 3 points)

Rnd 3:

Player 1 V Player 4 - Draw
Player 2 V Player 3 - 2 Wins

Player 1 has a 10 SOS, and 7 Result Points (Player 2 is now worth 6 points, player 3 is still worth 3 points, player 4 is worth 1 point)
Player 2 has a 11 SOS, and 6 Result Points (Player 1 is now worth 7 points, player 4 is now worth 1 points, Player 3 is worth 3 points)
Player 3 has a 14 SOS, and 3 Result Points (Player 4 is now worth 1 points, Player 1 is now worth 7 points, Player 2 is worth 6 points)
Player 4 has a 16 SOS, and 1 Result Points (Player 3 is still worth 3 points, player 2 is now worth 6 points, Player 1 is worth 7 points)

Keep in mind that the OP site will time out if it takes you too long to enter your results. So please have them in note pad (or word pad, or excel, or something) if you've got a lot to enter so that you can copy/paste if need be.

Hopefully this helps?

OMG! Thank you so much! That really does clear everything up. Thanks for going out of your way to get all that infomation and even giving something to use as a reference. Once again thank you so much!

Ok I am uderstanding all of it except SOS, sorry but this right now is going over my head. Like in round 2, if 4 has won none why do they have the same SOS as everybody else? Can someone please help me out just a little more?

Just to repeat myself for a second - SOS = Strength of Opponents Schedule.

That means; "How tough were your opponents?"

Or - "What was the record of your opponents?"

Even though player 4 has not won a game, he has faced opponents who have. SOS is entirely based off of a players opponents, and has nothing to do with their own record.

To use another example.

Say I'm at a big tournament with 6 rounds, and 50 people.

Round 1, I win. I'm 1-0. After the game, he gets a phonecall, and has to go home. He drops from the tournament. For the rest of the tournament, he will not face anyone. Because of that, he will be worth 0 points for MY SOS. <No Wins = 0 Points>

Round 2, I win again. He won his first match-up, but with my luck, he doesn't win another game. He finishes 1-5, and is worth 3 points for my SOS. <1 Win x 3 points>

Round 3, I draw. My opponent won his first two matches, and finishes undefeated winning every match. 5-0-1. He's worth 16 points for my SOS. <5 Wins x3 Points + 1 point for the Draw>

Round 4, I loose. My opponent was 3-0 coming in, and looses his next two match-ups after me. He finishes 4-2. He's worth 12 points on my SOS. <4 Wins x 3 points>

Round 5, I win. My opponent was 3-0-1 coming in. (I was paired up. Don't worry, I got over it, it happens to me lots) due to diversity, he knows he can't make the cut, so he drops after our match. He is worth 10 points to my SOS. <3 wins x 3 points + 1 point for the Draw>

Round 6 My opponent <Bob> is 4-0-1, I managed to eek out a win. He finishes 4-1-1. He is worth 13 points for my SOS. <4 wins x 3 points + 1 point for the draw>

At the end of Swiss, I finish 4-1-1. Which happens to be the same as Bob.

We are cutting to a top 8, and 4-1-1 ties us for 8th spot. Only one of us can make it in.

We both have the same result points: 4 wins x 3 points + 1 for the draw = 13 points.

This is where SOS comes in as a tie breaker.

My SOS is 0+3+16+12+10+13 = 54 points.

Bob faced a tougher slate of opponents: 10+6+8+10+12+13 = 59 points.

Because Bob faced tougher opponents, he advances to the top cut, while I go back to the hotel and shake my fist at the guy who dropped after the first round.

Let me know if you've got further questions.

Ok thanks! I just noticed too that the old tournament software had it built in as tie breaker, so I will probaly use that 90 percent of the time.
