First Read Through of Heroes. . .

By oshfarms, in Battlelore

I just finished reading through the Heroes rules and, for the most part, really like what I saw. I can't wait to get this expansion.

A quick observation: Why is the Riding skill a class specific skill? Especially when there are "generic" skills to choose from. It seems that "Riding" would have fit better as a "generic" skill. No big deal, just an observation.

Also, when we play, we play using Epic and Call to Arms. There is no instruction on how to use some of the new elements with Epic (i.e. placing the Grave Yard or the Witches Hut and the Treasure Tokens.) Perhaps FFG could release a PDF that would address this?

Overall, I like what I see. Even the fact that an experienced hero eventually retires as an advisor on the War Council. Which begs the question: with the additional council level the hero provides, can the council effectively consist of a level four council member? I would assume so, but it never specifically says. Also, I believe my group will allow someone who has their hero join the council be able to start a new hero for the field of battle (not waiting until the retired hero is forced off the council after 5 loses).

I'd love to hear what others think.

Steven

Riding seems to be class-specific because you generally want the skill card available (can't remember if skills are limited to cards available, but I would guess so), and with potentially 4 heroes out there in Epic, it allows everyone to take Riding if they choose--if it was a generic, only one person would be able to. If I remember correctly, though, it's the exact same effect for each hero (I think it has a movement of 4 on everyone--I didn't look too closely at everyone's riding card, but I don't recall seeing anyone with a different movement speed).

Battle Sevvy is AWESOME.. it adds so much in the game. Now flanks can actually be "flying" not just free hit-counters... just swallow the first and see that thats the biggest thing in BL since ... ALL !

I've mentioned this on BGG, but I don't believe I have here - I've always liked the distinction between C&C:Ancients and BattleLore in terms of the battlebacks. I wonder if DoW left off the "battle savvy" version of battlebacks from the original release, or if that part of Battle Savvy was included in response to many who have expressed displeasure at the "sitting duck" affect that breaking formations can have in BL. Not going to ruin the experience for me, by any means, as still some incentive for being bold, but I'm not as enthusiastic as Alistaja about that aspect of Battle Savvy gui%C3%B1o.gif Weakens cards like Portal and Greater Portal (perhaps intentionally) and several other cards become less essential (Fearless, Mass Shield, First Strike/Ambush, Evade/Scatter,...)

Hi Steven

Q. Why is the Riding skill a class specific skill? Especially when there are "generic" skills to choose from. It seems that "Riding" would have fit better as a "generic" skill. No big deal, just an observation?

A. In this way, each Hero has the opportunity to gain Riding as a Skill.

Q. Overall, I like what I see. Even the fact that an experienced hero eventually retires as an advisor on the War Council. Which begs the question: with the additional council level the hero provides, can the council effectively consist of a level four council member?

A. Your Hero that joins the War Council as an advisor could indeed create a level four council member. It will take some time, but when it happens:

Level 4 - Starting Lore cards 4 - Initial Lore token reserve 4 - Maximum Lore cards 5

Q. May someone who has their hero join the council be able to start a new hero for the field of battle, not waiting until the retired hero is forced off the council after 5 loses?

A. Players are not required to play a single Hero until he/she reaches the War Council. A player may start and therefore have a number of Heroes to choose from at the start of an adventure. Just make sure each Hero has his own Character Sheet to track skills, artifacts and wounds.

Greetings Mr. Borg,

And thank you for replying to this thread. I appreciate the updated statistics for a level 4 council member. I had assumed they would only be level 4 in regards to card effects (i.e. "roll 1d/level"). It is a bonus to have the upgrade to lore master's cards and initial lore as well!

If you don't mind me asking for some clarification? If I have played a hero long enough for him (or her) to ascend to the war council, must I then choose to either use that hero as an advisor or use another hero on the field? Or is it possible to have the advisor on the council while starting a new hero in the field of battle?

Thanks again for your time.

Steven

As me The Alistaja hate the FF/RR/HR--- as overpowered, battle sevvy makes some spels less powerfull but SOME more powerfull. Like Slow. Attacks with d2. ? just 2 dices and reduces also the flag possibility.

Another cool thing is that command cards are now NOT so divided to good and bad cats. Now scout is not as bad as week ago. Bold is still winner, but now being not bold is an option !

But the best thing in this is the fact that this give more diversity to strategy ! Now you can (For example) just send you green units to some flank forest and no need to fell that you are giving free flags.

I also like that this makes mounted units think twice to attack red alone unit ;)

Cool.. need to test this in time...

I don't understand Battle Savvy, does it apply to all units in play when it is active for the adventure?

Edit: Just saw it in another post, i was correct...just not sure i like that idea because it removes some of the need to keep your units in formation. It would be kinda cool to if you could only pick a certain number of units to be battle savvy for an adventure, instead of all of them. And i still think those lousy goblins need a little help, at least the green banner ones... :)

If this is covered in another thread, please feel free to point me in that direction, but...

I noticed in the Heroes scenarios, that a couple of them require 100 years' war to play. That expansion is impossible to find for a reasonable price. So, my question is, when is FFG going to reprint that thing?

Several of the adventures require various expansions.

Read my errata thread for a reply by Richard.

A note from FFG regarding the old expansions would be good !
