Would you buy an FFG/Star Wars themed carrying case?

By Ziusdra, in X-Wing

As I start to pick up some of the S&V ships, on top of all the ships I have from all the other waves, I'm noticing that my current carrying system is starting to go beyond its max capacity.

Shopping for a new carrying case sucks. Looking around at Amazon, I'm never really sure which case will safely fix X-Wing miniatures. So many of them look like they're made for Warhammer 40k. Except for the couple of products where customers specifically wrote a review about their use of the product to store X-Wings, I am pretty much in the dark about what works to carry miniatures.

Then I thought: I would totally pay a premium for a FFG or Star Wars-themed carrying case that is fitted to carry X-Wing miniatures. And I bet a number of other people out there would, too. If it were available in stores, I would probably also pick up an extra miniature on my way out the door, to go into my new case and help justify the upgrade. FFG, read this tread: I'm basically doing your market research for you.

Yes, in a heartbeat. I'd buy faction specific ones too. Also I'd buy some form of official FFG card storage too.

Why not use LaserTouch, Battlefoam, or KR multicase? All of them do trays and/or bags for X-wing and I believe all of them have custom tray creators if you don't like the standard x-wings trays or want a different layout.

I have a LaserTouch bag and am very happy with it, but then New Zealand isn't quite so bad for postage from Australia so your mileage may vary.

Well, I play an FFG/Star Wars themed game, so... Yeah.

As long as it's a Feldherr one to boot with, yes. I got 2 KR multicases and one Feldherr and I constantly regret having started with the KR's.

I want faction-specific cases. A clean, grey-and-black Imperial case; a rusty, red-striped Rebel case; and a dingy, yellow-brown Scum and Villainy case. This way, I can eliminate one third of my fleet for when I meet up with someone who has theirs, or only need to carry two of them when I play against someone who doesn't have their minis. And of course, a card holder would be nice. I cut the box lid of one of my old core sets and used it as the front cover on a 2" binder, but it would be nice to have an official product.

I've got Battle Foam for mine. Yes, it's a bit more expensive than a Plano case, but it looks and feels safer for my £££s of X-Wing miniatures. I've hopefully future proofed it by trying to guess which ships FFG may release over the next couple of waves and then had sections for those ships in 1/270 scale.

If you go this route, do not use their trays. Always do custom. You can fit so much more in.

I just bought a double sized case from http://www.krmulticase.com/ they have a buy one get one free offer at the moment if you buy one of their new sizes so I got two massive cases for £40 each effectively.

Probably not, I prefer something more neutral. Happy with my Feldherr cases.

Just posted the same in a similair thread, but I'll repeat here.

I use a Shield bag from Battlefoam.

It is expensive, but compare £100 vs the value of your collection.

Also holds an insane amount of ships with custom trays.

***well worth the time messing around with custom trays, some clever maneuvering can fit loads of stuff in each tray***

Mine holds 100pts (minimum) of all small base ships (except the Hawk, only 2 of those)

2 Falcons, 3 Firespray, 2 YT2400, 2 Shuttles, 2 Decimator, 1 Rebel transport, 2 IG88

Also has spaces for all dials, templates, cards, dice, tokens, asteroids etc.

Still has spare trays for future waves.

Pockets are large enough for all movement templates and rues / FAQs.

No thanks... I have a fully functional box (with lovely duct tape accents :P )that holds all my stuff. FFG get enough of my money. Any $$ I spend will go to something that actually gets used in a game... like more ships. Not interested in carrying cases. Not interested in fancy movement templates. Not interested in terrain pieces... well... maybe... if it is not something I can make cheaply and easily myself. Just my opinion but XWM is not the only game I play (would that it were...) so I really need to pick and choose where my money goes so I can get the most bang for my buck.

That is just me but, hey... you asked. :)

You are paying for an illusion. I've used my Plano since Wave 1 and I've had no problems with the ships. I keep them on the pegs and stands and can pop them out at a moment's notice.

Personally, I think FFG is too late to the market. Those that would pay for expensive cases have already done so. They should just make deals with existing 3rd party companies. Maybe have a custom cardboard box for KR or something like that.

I started off using Plano and it was fine. As I expanded with pegs, token, large ships and finally epic Plano just didn't cut it. I got into Battle Foam, yes for a price, but I do like it. Would I do that with every game? Most likely not but I'm actually carrying less pieces and more ships in less total space that actually fits better when I put it away. Pricey? Yes but for me it seems to work well.

AN illusion of what, securement? I think the Plano cases are an elegant solution and you can't beat the cost over the foam storage. To make an argument that the safety of the ships is the same is just plan silly. I would offer you this challenge, we will both stand with our storage container at shoulder height and drop it to the ground. I know my Battle Foam will take that kind of abuse, the Plano case itself may not survive the fall not alone your ships inside.

I've had my Plano fall off a table with no damage the ships inside. It wasn't shoulder length, but...when would it ever fall that far? The highest mine ever goes is on a table.

I probably would, yes.

yes I would, and Stone37 above said it all for me...

No, I like my toolbox. Besides, I fear that if FFG released a case, the next FAQ would declare that only their case is tournament legal...

I've thought a case that doubled as an Action transport could be neat.

I would absolutely pay for a "tournament" case. Something narrow and lengthy like a pencil box so it fits easily on any table, but able to hold any 100 point fleet you can think of. Generic foam bays for ships, spots for tokens, hinged in the right place... etc. But as for a different carry case? Its so hard to think of what might be coming in the future so I will just stick with my (now 2) plano 5231's.

I am more than happy with my Plano. I thought I was running out of space a while ago, but even after buying a second HWK, a bomber, a second firespray and a second Rebel aces, there is still room. Granted wave 7 will likely break me, but the Plano also holds all my templates, upgrade cards, tokens, bases, etc. I freaking love it, and worst comes to worst some unused ships come out of the case.

Depends on the case and the price. Luggage is not one size fits all.
