New Scum player, here's what I've got available--what's a good 100pt beginner build?

I'm just getting into X-Wing, and in an act of either supreme braveness or impulsive insanity (likely a mix of the two) I've ditched my other wargames and gone all-in on this one. And while there's likely a force of all 3 factions in my future, for now I've decided to focus on Scum & Villainy.

I've gotten a few tips from the players at the local store, and wanted to list all the stuff I've got and see what you guys would suggest as a good build. I'm open to "Next Purchase" recommendations as well.

Doubt the Starter Set is good for much, given my current faction desires, but figured I'd list it for completeness :)

You should pick up another Y-Wing at some point, as it's always tempting to put a couple scum ones into the same list. With those... wow, there's not a lot of Elite Pilot skills in those sets. Hmm, let me think...

Here's my first idea I cobbled together:

Kavil: Blaster Turret, R4 Agromech

Laetin A'shera: "Heavy Scyk" Interceptor, Stealth Device, Heavy Laser Cannon

Torkhil Mux: Ion Cannon Turret, K4 Security Droid

Black Sun Soldier: N/A

You could also drop the Soldier down to a Binyare Pirate and give Veteran Instincts to Kavil, boosting him to 9.

Pretty standard Kavil build, as the Agromech will trigger off using the focus token for his turret, allowing him to re-roll his four dice turret shots with a target lock.

A'shera... never actually seen this before (though I'm sure others have done it), and my basic idea is to make him as tempting as a target as possible with that HLC. But if they miss, which the Stealth Device will help with, it'll make it even harder to hit him the next time. You could float him around range 3 firing the HLC and taking Evade actions, daring someone to waste a long range shot to simply make him even harder to hit for that turn. And if they focus on Kavil then Laetin is free to tear the enemy up with his cannon.

Mux... well, he's pretty cheap and his ability is mildly amazing (drops any enemy ship of your choice down to 0 pilot skill during the combat phase... pretty hard counter for Phantoms with Advanced Cloaking Devices). Ion Turret is a solid support weapon, and he can leave ships defenseless for Kavil and Laetin to clean up. Security Droid means when he takes a green move in close quarters he can get a free target lock, focus for his action, and then have both modifications to try and guarantee an ionization.

And the Black Sun Soldier is just filler, though his PS of 3 will let him get shots off before the far more common PS1 or 2 ships out there.

Now I'm gonna post this and see if I can't find a fun way to make that Firespray of yours work. You know, maybe something less "cobbled together". With that said, I actually don't think that list up above is half bad.

So yeah, I'm failing at getting the Firespray in there. :(

I would highly recommend acquiring engine upgrade for Kath and another M3-A with mangler. That being said, here is a list based on your stuff and gives you a good learning list.

I'm running kath emon and boba to great success, most of all boba in my current build, a y wing with blaster turrer, btl and unhinged make for a lovely mass damage, and mux I fine great for taking wins from elite high ps pilots and tooled with an ion cannon can still perform a combat function which is very important

I've looked into the other ships I don't own for this faction, the StarViper and the IG ship (Aggressor). The former looks super maneuverable and tricksy. The latter looks like I need at least 2 to make it worth it. Any advice on picking up either of those?

I was right where you are now a. Lille weeks ago. I made a 100 point list that works pretty well out of Most Wanted, Slave 1 and the core set. It's not a competitive list but it got me playing.

I did Boba Fett, a hired thug (Y-wing) and 2 black sun Soldiers.

I didn't have a lot of upgrades but I used what I could on Boba and the thug. For the thug give him an astromech a turret and the title and your pretty well set. I gave Boba a cannon and a couple of other little things to round it out.

Sorry I can't be more specific. I didn't write any thing Down and switched things up a bit in follow up games, point is you can pull out a 100 point list from what you have just fine and get playing.

I wouldn't get to caught up in the double IG build. There are some very strong builds but they are beatable. I've had some very good casual success with the following list. The key with large ships is going to be engine upgrade. So you may want to see if anyone has one or two for trade.

Use Palob to strip the focus or evade tokens to give you extra attack dice with opportunist, if you can get them in the rear arc of Kath it becomes a very deadly ship. The Z-95s are there primarily for blocking to help setup Kath


Added an Aggressor and another Y-Wing today. Feeling even better about my options now. Thanks for all the great lists and feedback. Looks like a lot of upgrades I still need to track down from various and sundry other sets. Slow and steady...

I've had alright results with two firesprays that are well tooled up.

Also liking 4 or 5 M3as at the moment.

Given your current collection though there is some sound advice above.

If you're playing 'friendly' games with people you know then i bet no one would mind the odd 'looted' x wing or tie in your list while you're building up forces... its hardly a game breaker to give a merc force a battered old TIE :)
