Luke and redirect

By scott80, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

A question for something that I'm not too sure on. Luke's ability is to treat a defending ship as having no shields.

How does this work with the redirect defence token? Can it still be used as normal? Does the redirected hull zone still count as having no shields for the attack (I.e. redirect not do anything).

Thanks for any help.

It will have no effect. Luke treats the ship like it has no shields. Redirecting to another zone with no shields won't do anything.

Yeah, they use their defense token, the attack hits an adjacent arc, the adjacent arc is treated as having no shields, and the results are identical.

Even if you wanted to, you can't, because you cannot redirect to a zone without shields

Is there a place where Luke and redirect get officially explained by FFG? My pal refuses to believe Luke can be so OP and not allow the use of defense tokens. Haha

Has your pal seen the bloody movies? He's lucky Luke doesn't get an automatic crit!

Not correct. Here's the FAQ, directly from FFG:

Can a ship spend a defense token even if it would have no effect?

A: Yes. For example, a ship can spend a token and choose an adjacent hull zone with no shields remaining.

But he can't redirect to a shield because Luke treats a defending ship as having no shields.

He can redirect but with the same outcome.

He's the hero of the rebellion. He costs almost 50% more than a standard X-Wing squadron... perhaps for a reason?

I think my pal was just a bit butt hurt. I mean I love him like a brother, but we just disagreed on how it worked. I think the fighter superiority is the charm of the Rebels. It's only one back die.

Yeah, and just imagine: If shooting a ship on a side with no shields, Luke is just an X wing that can brace....

Except he rolls a black instead of a red die.

For some official proof... my question and response from James Kniffen

Rules Question:

Does Luke's ability land on hull regardless of defense tokens? Argument came up that redirect would be able to place the damage on another zone IE absorbed by shields after the attack. Common thought in the forums is that the redirect would have no effect on damage as Luke ignores shields. Just want to confirm.

Defense tokens can still be spent and produce their effect, but the Redirect token can’t block Luke’s attack. Luke’s ability treats the defender as having no shields, and the “defender” is the entire ship, not just the defending hull zone. A hull zone that had damage redirected to it would be unable to take any of that damage because it has no shields, so the damage would all return to the defending hull zone.
Thanks for playing!

Be careful with the equivalences on the effect. While doing so may not prevent/alter the damage you take, you absolutely can use any of the tokens against Luke. This distinction is important because other effects could trigger off of these spent tokens in the future.
