Rules about 3D-Printing Ships

By Nickvr628, in Star Wars: Armada

Are there any rules that would prevent me from 3D printing more tie fighters, ships, etc and then paint them to look like the real thing? And If I am allowed to would I be able to use them in tournament? I could make some really big fleets if I could do this...

maniacal laugh....

Haven't seen anything, normally companies say something like 60% (or 100%) of the models need to be produced by their own company for tournaments.

Tournament rules dictate that all the models need to be from FFG and this game or it is not legal.

Nothing stopping you for playing with your buds but you'll need the real thing if you want to show up at tourneys and Odin help you if you try to sell them.

Are there any rules that would prevent me from 3D printing more tie fighters, ships, etc and then paint them to look like the real thing?

That's not a serious question is it?

The amount of effort and cost it would take to 3d print more ships would not be worth it. Remember you also need all the appropriate bases and cardboard bits. 3d printing for custom ships is a cool idea but not exactly cost effective.

It would not be worth it considering all the above points, cost/benefit and legal issues. However if I had access to a printer like that I would go to town making stuff to destroy and turn into awesome terrain, if that's the case go to town man.

As was said earlier. Copyright. That is the big one i tend to stick with original or inspired by' designs.

And it also depends on the kind of printer you have with regards to quality, I still use Shapeways because the one id need to produce my lines are many thousands of dollars.

I have access to a 3d printer through work. We just have to pay for the material for personal projects. I'm not interested in trying to print existing ships or find a way to save some money. Instead I would want to print stuff that isn't and probably never will be available. The first thing that comes to mind is alternative Mon Cal cruisers. I seems like it would be weird to have 2 "Home Ones" on the table. I am not worried about stands etc. I can buy the expansion packs. I just love the idea of busting out a model no one else has.

I haven't started building any 3d models of anything yet. Maybe once work slows down a little.

That, Gorthaur, Would be awesome. I could also see making your own fighters, Maybe defenders or Chiss Clawcraft. Of course everyone else is right to be wary of the copyright issues, but as long as you are only using them in a casual setting I don't see how it could be an issue.
