Transport Set

By Tycho120, in Star Wars: Armada

I was thinking a cool expansion would be a Transport Set, which would allow for all sorts of convoy escort, convoy ambush, boarding action type scenarios. The set could come with GR-75 medium transports, lambda/sentinel shuttles, and maybe EU ships like bulk freighters, mobquet freighters, DS9 stormtrooper transports etc. Does anyone think FFG would do something like this?

That is a rather brilliant idea. It provides enough canon ships to create a complete wave and allows for some new scenarios, new cards, and pilots. And you can even use it to incorporate the shuttle and introduce boarding party actions (ala the stormtroopers invading the Tantive 4 in ANH).

If FFG does this they should send you 2 free sets.

I'd buy such a mission based expansion.

I'd buy it. I've got a bunch of old transport miniatures from WotC's miniature game. I posted a picture of them in another thread. I've been trying to think of a way of incorporating them into a battle. Maybe I'll just use them as Objective Markers for now.

the transports would be very small

the transports would be very small

But bigger than the wave 2 "Rogues and Villains" expansion, right? Would you think they'd go on squadron bases, or just be tiny models on a small ship base?

This is a great idea. They could come out with all kinds of mission based expansions.

My idea was for the Lambda Shuttles, DX-9s and even GR-75s to be on squadron bases. Larger ships like bulk freighters would go on small ship bases.

I like the idea, but I'd put Rebel Transports on something smaller then a small base - more like a double base squadron than a full ship.

Fantastic idea. It could even come with a set of objectives designed around them... even if they're not tournament legal, I think an expansion like that, whose sole purpose is enhancing the casual game aspect, would be a big hit.

A Tiny base? You could give it just two hull zones/shields/firing arcs. So closer to how it is in X-Wing.

No, I would make it larger than a tiny based squadron, but I personally would use a squadron-type damage track. Picture two squadron bases attached to each other - that's about the size I would like to see. Ok, maybe three together - I just don't see them being large enough to put on a small ships base, especially if they are just scenario pieces.

Maybesomething like a new style Games workshop 40k bike base

Yes - like that. In my opinion, they don't need to be divided into sections like a standard ship, they just need a damage track like squadrons but maybe move like ships. That lets them take a few hits and not steal focus from the big ships but be viable for scenarios and still move like a larger ship.

And Make them able to be attacked by battery armament, but they count as obstructed due to their small size, and give them a defence token or 2 depending on what they do

I wouldn't mind medium to large transports being on Small bases. But i could see a double sized squadron base with a ship card and maybe 2 command dials

The BFF-1 Bulk Freighter is 120m and the Container Transport is 200m, so right in the range for the small ship base. There's also a Freighter Type C from XW:A at 190m.

We saw the GR-75 flying in formation with other small craft in ESB, so I think the squadron base will be fine for the 90m and smaller. Maybe a two prong flight stand instead of three.

Good point about being attacked by battery armament though, maybe that could be a keyword?
Large Target - This squadron may be targeted by the enemy's battery or squadron dice. [Crit Icon] count as damage (Crit Effects still not resolved)

It might be cool if they gave you more points for fleet building(negative cost) but if destroyed are worth a lot to your opponent. They would just be built like a squadron and have very little defense, that way you would have to defend them.

I like this idea as well, but it could cause balance issues. I think there would need to be a hard limit on these like for fighters, something like "No more than X fleet points can be acquired from convoy ships"

Great Idea.

I realy hope they add content like that in the sense of some descent "big box" expansions which add more content other than "only" bringing out new ships and models. Such szenarios, missions, campaigns or themed boxes would greatly increase the longevitivity of the game system as well. I hope they do this step forward from X-Wing into a newer and better exansion upgrade mechanic. Even if such missions or campaigns are just optional flavor which can be used to tie the individual battles to something more thematic.

I like this idea, but I would then have issues with the movement of them if they were to behave like squadrons. I would want them to move like the capital ships, otherwise they could just be quickly clumped into a corner of the map. That or maybe have like a "panic" deck. Every time a friendly ship blows up, each transport draws from the panic deck. Most of the panic cards, nothing happens, but a percentage of the cards send a transport fleeing in some specified direction.

Exactly.

Space stations. Transports. And whatever else I fail tot hink of.

Add a nice book of sorts with scenario's (preferably linked to a campaign!) and hey presto; my last moneyz to FFG!

For sure. Having as many as you want would break the game, mate anywhere from 2-4 max or a point threshold dependent on how powerful they would be.

I like the idea of them being linked to objectives - the transport costs fleet points, but increases your ability to gain obejctive points - so it's a balancing act. Do you take more transports to make it easier to get objectives, or fewer transports but spending more points on ships to protect them?

The first question we should ask is why are there rebel transports in the battle of Endor? Then if there is a reasonable answer, we make the transports do that.
