Soul Drinker and Unicorn

By Edriss, in Talisman Rules Questions

Hello,

I'm in a battle and I have the Soul Drinker and the Unicorn. I roll a double for my attack roll, so my Unicorn is killed. My question is : does the Unicorn contribute to my attack score ?

Soul Drinker : " No good character may have the Soul Drinker. You may roll 2 dice in battle and choose which result to use for your attack roll . If you roll doubles, the Soul Drinker will kill one of your Followers at random and melt to the discard pile."

Unicorn : " Add 1 to your Strength and 1 to your Craft ."

Thanks in advance !

I'd say yes.

Same argument* as I think I remember is used to determine whether you will lose 1 in attack score when using fate when fighting enemies such as Verdandi (your score is based on your fate total).

(You don't get -1 from using fate as far as I remember from that thred).

*your strength/craft is determined before the battle starts so anything that happens after that will not reduce strength/craft (for that fight).

I personally would rule that the unicorn would add, yes.

The killing of the follower happens as a result of the combat. Strength and Craft are tabulated before the results of combat.

My take anyway.

Interesting- nowhere in Soul Drinkers text does it say anything about "after battle" but because you have the simultaneous effects rule you can argue that the player can decide.

From Rulebook, page 10:

Any effects or abilities that affect a character’s Strength or Craft must be implemented before the attack roll is made.

In other words, once the attack roll is made Strength (or Craft) bonuses and penalties cannot be changed. If the Unicorn is killed by Soul Drinker, you still consider its bonus for the current combat.

The same is valid for fate spent to reroll the attack roll and the interactions it may have with foes like Atlas Ogre, Titan Wraith and Verdandi.
