Which small box expansion is the most fun?

By k7e9, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

We're planning on playing through the core box campaign again after finishing up Labyrinth of Ruin. We though that we'd get one of the small box (i.e. The Trollfens, Lair of the Wyrm, Manor of Ravens) expansions to throw some rumor quests into the mix.

So which one of the small box expansions do you think is the most fun and why?

All of the mini campaigns have fun quests and come with rumor cards for the main campaign.

I would rank them (in order of my preference:)

1. Trollfens - it has the green dice, and also has the secret room mechanic- the quests are particularly interesting.

2. Lair of the Wyrm - I like the heroes/classes of this mini campaign the best- it also has the secret room mechanic.

3. Manor of Ravens - No secret room mechanic, but it does have 2 OL class decks (including the Unkindness class.)

I think Zaltyre gave a pretty good description.

Heroes and classes are definatly the best in the LoW. Manor of Ravens features the most interesting setting imho (an abandoned wizardmansion), great OL decks and the bandits monstergroup that is extremely fun to play (maybe even the most interesting monstergroup of all the small expansions). Moreover the quests in Manor of Ravens are really well done, although I can't compare them to the other minicampaigns.

So if you are most interested in new heroes/classes get LoW, if you want more OL stuff (monsters and cards) and don't care much about the secret room mechanic get MoR and if you are not looking for a particular aspect get Trollfens.

Why not play them all and see what rumor cards you draw?

Mainly our group feels that adding content to a game is easier if you do it step by step, one expansion at a time. Then everyone can familiarize themselves with the new stuff in each expansion, instead of getting overwelmed by all the new options (monsters, heroes, classes, liutenants/agents, other new rules etc). In the end we will probably own all of them, but we feel it is better to buy them one at a time. :)

My girlfriend and I play Descent with me as Overlord and her controlling four heroes. Usually, the campaigns are close-run throughout. It may have just been hero and class selection, but we just finished a Manor of Ravens mini-campaign and did not enjoy it as much as the others. It seemed very much in favour of the Overlord - it was a four-mission wipe in my favour. I'd rank Lair of the Wyrm and Trollfens as equally good.

I have Lair of the Wyrm and plan on picking up Trollfens next. Need to balance out my classes a little. But oh my lord, I really don't like Reynhart all that much. Or Champion class. Waiting for Heroic abilities to Proc? Nope... much rather use them when I need them.

Reynhart is an excellent warrior, re-rolls for atack dice are a god like gift and not to be over looked in any way.

Champion is an interesting class, its very stamina light in use and is a pretty good team buff (the stamina light is excellent news as well).

And since most of the skills don't have a an action to use and give tokens on killing monsters gaining tokens is never a problem if you are doing the warrior right.

Thanks for all the input.

We are leaning towards Trollfens at the moment due to the secret room mechanic which sounds interesting plus an additional green die is also nice to have.

But the classes in Lair of the Wyrm sounds like fun (only judging by the names), especially Geomancer sounds like an interesting mage class.

I rolled three misses in a row with him once. Three misses... all on one attack. (( Normal attack. Heroic Ability, Heroic Feat.))

Manor of Ravens takes the cake for me. There is so much thematics thrown into this expansion and I love every new mechanism introduced in it. Tiles, monsters, hero classes, OL cards, lieutenant, everything is just great with this expansion.
