Homebrewed Rogue Trading

By Psion2, in Rogue Trader

Already asked something like this on the Dark Heresy boards way back when but I think it might interest some of the people here.

For those who are thinking of running a game of Rogue Trader somewhere other then the Kronous Expanse, where do you plan on running your game? Some other sector of space in the 40k universe or in an entirely unrelated setting all together? Please share your thoughts on the matter.

I'll probably start in the Expanse but then seing how you have a warp capable ship theres nothing to keep my players there

Other then chasing down a cartographer who has a map of the other regions (which could be an Endeavor in itself.)

I was actually thinking of running a campaign out on the Eastern Fringe, where the baddies are less chaotic and more bug-like, where the Tau Empire will compete for resources, and where Calgar and his rule-loving pretty boys will be an annoyance to the players in every venture.

A few adventure ideas that I had for this setting:

Salvage a ship that has been attacked by Tyranids (who seem only to be interested in biomass), but are there threats aboard?

Run-ins with the "Supernatural Inhabitants of the Ghoul Stars".

Smuggling restricted materials into the supposedly utopian realm of Ultramar (with Space Marines keeping a close eye on you).

Receive an envoy from the Tau only to find that the ambassador and his party are all traitorous humans.

The possibilities are endless, really.

You have some good sources on the Eastern Fringe? I toyed with idea of moving both Calixis and the Maw to the Far East. It should not be that difficult.

Interesting ideas. Personally I'm not sure where I'll start. Depending on the temperments of my group I have a couple of options:

- Canon setting: While no one in my group is particularly familiar with the 40k universe (except me,) I remember seeing a few opprotunities for shennigans fit for a Rogue Trader in the Calixis sector when I last leafed through a copy of Dark Heresy. I've also been itching to run someone through Forsaken Bounty and Dark Frontier.

- Vatta's War: I'll have to fudge a starmap but I've been a bit of a fan of this series for a while. While I haven't seen the rulebook yet, I feel that there are enough similarities (mechanically speaking) between settings for me to work something out.

- Something of Mine: Depending on my current group, I might have something else I can try although I'm not sure how it would work out.

Aside from some Codices and such, not really (though that being the usual haunt of GW's favourite blue posterboys means that there is SOME info). I really don't mind just making things up, though I'm just anal enough to base them in the canon.

The "Supernatural inhabitants of the Ghoul Stars" being one of those things - that is all that we know about them, that they're supernatural and hang out in the Ghoul Stars. Little things like that are great to get the imagination going.

I am also placing my game in the Eastern Fringe. I am planning on using a tri-sector region of space. The Gladius Sector, which is what I am naming the sector in which Ultramar rests, the Aegis Sector, and the Kryptaeus Region. The Gladius sector represents the Imperial strongpoint, an area of safety and security (relatively speaking) with strong allies and ready backers. The Aegis Sector is the cast-offs of the Gladius Sector, as well as its frontier into the Kryptaeus Region, which is ill-omened and tends to swallow expeditions into it--but recently, a few ships have managed to find stable warp routes deep into its heart.

hmm i hadnt even thought of that. Basing the campaign in a diffrent sector could be interesting. Sabbat worlds might be a good one (reading gaunts ghosts at the moment)

though usinging say eastern fringes including Ultima Segmentum might be interesting, cuse then you have the maelstrom (red coursiars), the splinter hive fleets (nids), the storm of the emporers wrath (more chaos), the ultramarines and the tau (as well of course as the orks but hey they be everywhere) and lets not forget iyanden craftworld. could be kinda cool.

Yeah, I think the Lexicum has some information on Ultramar and their defense against the Tyranid invasion. Although the smurfs should be easy to handle from a game master's standpoint.
