Xenos in the Empire

Nuff said. What is your position on Xenos in the Imperium?

Are there roving bands of Eldar mercenaries from Shattered Craftworld Mel-Ni-Bone like in 1e Rogue Trader? Or are you more of a monodominant sort of bomb them all up? Is your Imperium actively aggresive and seeking out new strange life-forms to obliterate or is it more conservative just wanting to isolate its population at large (except those that have proper permission like Rogue Traders) from possibly corrupting xeno influence?

In my campaign the Imperium is actively agressive not per se in obliterating xenos, but in acquiring new territory. Such expansion often brings the Imperium in conflict with xenos races and then the obliterating starts ... of either man or the alien :)

In my campaign's th Imperium at large is aggressive towards wanting to obliterate alien species, however often it must concede to the fact that there won't always be enough resources to instigate a war with some xenos populated worlds, and if the xenos themselves don't pose an immediate threat to the Imperium they will be pretty much left alone for the time being (much like the relationship between the Tau and the Imperial forces described in the Ciaphas Cain novels).

As for the general view of xenos, the faceless masses of human population are taught that the xenos are enemies and either fear them or hate them or both, it is only when you come up in the higher echelons of power (like the Inquisition) that a more intelligent and tolerant views are more accepted. Although the people all in favour of friendly relations with xenos species are few in number in comparison to the rest who either show outspoken hatred towards aliens or hold a more cautious distrust towards them.

I guess my version of the Imperium is a bit like the general population and Inquisition during the middle ages. If you were accused of being a witch and caught by the mob, you'd be burned on the stake rather swiftly, and it wouldn't matter what you had to say for your defence. However if a real Inquisitor investigated your case, you'd probably be set free, since the Inquisitors in general were more educated than the general and superstitious public.

In my own campaigns particularly useful xenos breeds are kept around as slave labor, and on rare occasions treated like pets by the Imperial nobles who rule over the alien's former home worlds. I've been toying with the notion of bringing a Kroot mercenary company into the game. Turning xenos against xenos and all that.

I think that the Jokoro (the spelling may be off on that one) are a common race that is kept around due to their skill with tech. So there is a precedent in 40K for xeno's being left alive, though subjugated.

In my campaigns the Imperium is aggressively expanding with the intention of eventually ruling the entire galaxy ... which doesn't leave much room for other species. In most cases the standard procedure is eradication, though if it seems feasable they occasionally subjegate the race instead, forcing them to labor on their own planet for the glory of the emperor. (may the sun be his throne, may shadows be cast before him and shattered on the anvil of rightousness)

There are rare exceptions ... primarily when the race in question cannot be defeated with acceptable loss of men and firepower. The Eldar, for example, with whom they have a tenative cease fire, which is often broken in the small skirmishes which have yet to break out into another full scale war. The Dwarves (because one of my players wanted them in the game) are a subjegated race, with their worlds gone they serve the Imperium as miners and smelters - I gave them a quasi-alliance with the Mechanicus, so they are allowed to rule themselves and the empire rarely interferes so long as they maintain their tithe and don't attempt to mingle with the humans.

asfar as it goes any Xenos race conicdered to be High Level Sentient (in other words can rival humanities grasp of civilisation, education and technology) are concidered threats to humanities dominance of the galaxy and should be destroyed, its just a shame that these races prove to be hard to wipe out (like the Tau and Eldar) Mid level sentient races (can talk but have a very basic level of civilisation) can be utilised to serve man kind but if they show signs of insubordination they are wiped out and finally low level sentient beings are widley used on many wolrds in the roles that would normally be filled by horsses, dogs and other such pets working or not
