Maester Vyman vs. Aegon's Hill

By cha0s2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Maester Vyman reads:

Response: If it is not Summer, kneel Maester Vyman to cancel a triggered effect that chooses a Stark character as the only target.

Aegon's Hill reads:

Challenges: Kneel Aegon's Hill to look at an opponent's hand. You may choose one character card in that hand and place it in its owner's dead pile.

Will Vyman be able to cancel the Hill if a Stark character is targeted in hand?

I was unsure at the time, but now that I read each card again I am leaning towards NO, because the triggered part of the Hill just lets your opponent look at your hand and Vyman cannot cancel that...hoping for some clarification. Thanks!

Well, keep in mind that the one trigger covers both effects. This is a single triggered effect with just two effects. So you can't say that Vyman can't cancel this because the discard part isn't triggered. It is triggered.

But, remember that in order to be actionable, cards must be in play unless something specifies otherwise. Since the character card chosen and discarded is not in play, it doesn't satisfy Vyman's play restriction (since Vyman doesn't say he can cancel an effect that chooses a Stark character in your hand, in the discard pile, or anywhere else other than the default "in play").

That's my take on it, anyway. You may want to send it to Nate to be absolutely sure, though.
