Newbie but enjoyed first game.

Wondering if when playing an ability off a foundation card or an asset in the staginging area they need to be commited as part of the act of using the ability/asset.

It depends upon the card. For Example :

Here you have brooding, to use this ability you just lose 1 vitality. Everything from the BOLD F,E,R that designates the type of ability to the COLON : is the cost for the ability. So to activate it, you do what it says. An example of cards that do commit are below.
