Is Chewbo still viable in the meta?

By gundamv, in X-Wing

Chewbo is Chewbacca + Leebo. Something like this:

Chewie

+MF

+PtL

+C3PO or Kyle/Recon Spec + Jan

Leebo

+Outrider

+HLC or Mangler Cannon

Remaining points can go towards additional upgrades like EU, Predator, PtL on Leebo, etc.

Is that still viable in the meta? How does that build fare against the following?

Deci+Phantom

Super Dash+Corran

Fat Han + Z-95s

Double IGs

Rebel Control

Swarms of any sort (TIEs, Zs, etc.)

I saw one expertly flown list shortly after Wave 6 came out. It made Top 4 in a 36-player tourney (and completely tabled my Panic Attack list when I faced it), but I don't know how well it'd do against double IGs with Autothrusters, or Soontir.

against swarms tie and decimator, I think his time has come!

at least in the last tournament done in my area, I have wiped out all the lists with two large ships

I took extra effort against large ships + 2/3 small

I actually don't care, I'd fly out just to be able to say, "Chewbo desu yo!" every time I put it on the table. I guess Chewie would be Kyoushou, since he's incredibly ancient, which I suppose would make Jan the eye candy...

How did it beat Panic Attack? Which ship in that build did Chewbo take out first?

I'm thinking about flying chewbo. Against panic I would not fly into it. Bs and Ys can't really rush into you. If you can cut across the mat you should be able to turn it into 2v3 and then it should be text book.

I usually try to fly past small based ships and then shoot them with my turret while out of their arc. Of course, this strategy does not quite work against ships with Autothrusters.

I fly Chewbo / Landash quite a lot and it's a pretty solid build against most things but does struggle against autothrusters - particularly on IG88s

The best all-round build I've come up with so far is this:

Chewbacca (51) YT-1300 (42), Predator (3), Recon Specialist (3), C-3PO (3)
“Leebo” (49) YT-2400 Freighter (34), Determination (1), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Jan Ors (2), Outrider (5)
save a point by dropping MF title and using Jan on the Outrider to give Chewie the evades

I bloody well hope so, I'm using it in an upcoming tournament!

How does it fare against double IG's? Theres a ton of those around locally, and i just cant see how Chewbo could possibly apply reliable damage fast enough.

I've tried it a couple of times and it didn't go well - although I tried flying the list like I would against against everything else - i.e moving away from my opponent - with IGs you really want to be getting right up in their grills and keeping them in arc so on reflection that way was probably the worst approach I could have taken.

You could could probably get it to work ok-ish but you will have to adapt your play style and you won't really be playing to the strengths of the list

About what i figured.

Are you at Entoyment sunday btw Funkleton? :D

not if you want to make friends

ever

Honestly i would say it is at least as viable as double Aggressor. Comparable Firepower and survivability.

I have to say however that there are a lot more low PS lists that do well and that makes it difficult for elite 2-Ship lists. Lists with tons of B-Eings, Warthogs, Scyk Mangler swarms, Tie Swarms or Tarn Mison Swarm can potentially ruin it for you!

Also against Autoceptors you should try to surprise them by keeping them in arc if possible...

It was Chewie with the title, PTO, 3PO and Kyle Katarn, and Leebo in the Outrider with Lone Wolf, a Recon Specialist and a Mangler. Chewie would attack first, stripping shields to maximize firepower from the Mangler cannon. He did a great job of using the big ships' speed in the 3-banks and 4-straights to avoid giving me too many range 2 shots, forcing me to split fire while burning my B-Wings down.

Hasn't it won a few store championships recently? I know a local player who plays it all the time and does well with it.

I'd probably go with Predator over PTL.

My Internet cover has been blown!

So, if the meta features a lot of swarm builds, then Chewbo would not be a good build choice, right?

I've never found swarms to be a particularly hard counter to Chewbo - in competitive play with timed games you can generally take more points off the board than your opponent can in the time limit - provided you play defensively (which makes sense anyway because Chewbo is a defensive list at heart) and make the swarm chase you.

What's the best asteroid/debris configuration for Chewbo?

I am not an expert on the list but have played it a few times and I would recommend three small astroids to create a pyramid for your fat turrets to fly through and put that 360 turrent to great use. Debris I would think is something to avoid I would pick my opponents debris to place it well out of the center and out of flight paths to avoid them.

...Can someone help me understand what Chewbo has going for it over, say, one of the Dash + Falcon lists?

Practically impossible to crit against Chewie (because he turns face up cards face down). Hard to deal a crit that is particularly damaging against Leebo (because it can choose the lesser of two evils).

All in all, it is a very durable build.

imo chewie and Leebo are going to excel in a meta full of mangler cannons.
