Firstly, I'd like to say that I, as well as most everyone else at gencon, was happy about this announcement. I fully agree with his reasons for this. I was talking to Steve the day prior to this, and he said that the game just isn't in the place it needs to be. The majority of people aren't even playing standard anymore, and are mostly playing miniblock as it is, so we'll see how this goes.
There are a few very key reminders though:
You do NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW STANDARD at a local tournament. Your scout can run "4 point shuriken" tournaments if everyone really wants this. Nothing is stopping this. The only thing that this will stop is major tournaments such as regionals and worlds, which, we're done with for a while.
Secondly: There is still legacy for that matter, which was stated was going to see more support at tournaments as well, if i recall correctly.
People were quitting the game because of standard. I was about ready to. It just wasn't fun, that's all there is about it. Worlds was like 60% stall decks, mill mill mill mill mill, good + darkness blade, blah blah. That was what it was. So, we needed this. This is going to do a ton of things; it's going to make it a lot easier for new players to get into the game, it's going to make things cheaper for people attempting to get their cards, and it's going to be fun once again.
I, at the very least, support this decision, because in the end, if you do have a problem your scout can just do inhouse rules on legality of sets.
