So, just checking...

Every ship starts at speed 2.

You STAY at speed 2, along with whatever turns are allowed in that speed band for your ship, unless you do a navigation command. You can use this to slow or speed up one, and also to click one more turn thingie (if you use it when you reveal your dial.)

Do I have that right?

Yes, but that is only for the learn to play scenario. After that, you choose your starting speed from any of the speed options from your card.

You can not start at 0, just to be clear. You can slow to zero after using navigate dial or navigate tokens, but when you are officially at speed zero, you can not use any defense tokens. Colliding into a ship keeps your normal speed in regards to tokens, but the "speed"/distance is changed. Just read about overlapping.
