additional regionals locations?

Will the number of regionals locations ever increase? With stores putting participation caps, which is understandable, perhaps more locations would help spread the workload. I know here in northern utah the closest regional tournament is in Boise, that's not even in our assigned region. It seems like it might be advantagious to FFG to open more spots, but then I am relatively uninformed and/or experienced in these matters. What do you think?

Not this year. It takes a lot of planning, so they aren't going to add more locations at the last minute.

They already did... last year, there were 2 per region. Now, there are 3 per region.

Since Regionals is a "Premier" level event I doubt FFG will increase it every year. They want these events to be special so increasing the number of events will only dilute the mystic.

I feel your pain. The Dayton regional is capped at 65ish. I know a store in MI tried to get a regional and has capacity for 120. Plus it's a shorter drive for me :)

Being in south east Idaho I really wish there was a regional in northern Utah. The real problem Utah has is the region it's in. Salt Lake is competing with all the major population centers in California, plus cities like Vegas, and Phoenix. Salt Lake also is much further from the other population centers in the region, so putting one there can't kill 2 birds with one stone. I don't expect to see a regionals in northern Utah any time soon. Which is sad because I think it has potential to be a big event. (For those who don't know Salt Lake host the 3rd largest comic con in the country)

I doubt regionals are exclusive simply for the sake of exclusivity. Rather, the exclusivity draws in players from a wider radius so that the competition should be very strong at every one of these events. During store championship season, you could show up to one tournament with world-class competition and the next weekend attend one where you place by keeping your ships from flying off the board for 75 minutes. I don't think I'm disagreeing with you, Deltmi; I'm just hypothesizing as to what makes the tournaments special.

As for expanding, we got 50% more regionals in the US this year than we had last year. If there are still a lot of players who try to play in a regional but are not able to, I would not be surprised to see more regionals or smaller regions next year.

I think you said it better than I did.

You, me and probably 100+ Michigan players who would show up for a local regional. The SE Michigan forum has the most views and posts of any organized play board, and the most regular game nights of any metro area listed. The Detroit area should definitely be a location next year!

Sigh. I wish. I'm in the Detroit area and can't make it to the Dayton regional, so it looks like I'll be schlepping to Chicago to get a regionals experience.
