I was looking into playing in a Regional again this year, but I am amazed on how much some of them are costing. $40?!?!?
Also, I don't remember if there was a maximum number set on participants last year, but the two closest to me are setting the event at 64 players max. A few of the store championships near the ATL Regional had 40+ players, so I am assuming that they will be maxed out at 64. I know someone will just suggest that I sign-up early, which I want to do, but due to other things in my personal life I can't guarantee that I can actually make the tournament. I had planned on attending at least 4 Store Championships, but I only made it to 2.
Also the only negative thing I remember from last year's Regional in ATL was that multiple of my opponents dropped out of the tournament (at least 2 of which had just beaten me immediately before dropping
) and that the guy who won was rather obnoxious during the entire event.
2015 Regionals
The regional here in Florida is capped at 64 players
Call ahead and ask if the price is refundable up to the day of the event. I'm registered for two(three as soon as registration opens for it ) so far and both have been refundable. As far as sizing, one is capped at 48, one at 80, the other at 96.
The folks running the Atlanta Regional this year have just stated that they're expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 120 participants. Entry fee for that one is $25.
Also, opponents dropping shouldn't matter at all this year, with MoV replacing SoS rankings.

Yea, I just saw that in the N GA X-Wing group on FB. I hope to be a part of that 120 player madness.
I'm going to 2 Regional's, both capped at 64. Costing 40 and 50.
Capping the Regionals will only hurt the store (if anything). It's proven that people will definitely travel across states to participate so the larger the people in attendance the more money the store makes. I plan on attending 2 Regionals, one in my own state and one in a neighboring state.
The cost is the big issue that is blowing up FB right now, not the cap. $40 is extreme no matter what the prize support.
For $50 the support better be food and lodging.
Is it a store or at a convention? Last year, I went to KublaCon and paid $50 for the weekend pass in order to play in the Regional. Not including hotel and travel costs...
The one I'm going to is hosting it in-house to my knowledge, and I can see $25 as the base cost. If your store can't handle a 64 person turnout, I could see the cost going up to rent a local area large enough to put this on. Are the $40 and $50 held (and capped) at that local store?
Will update about the $40 Raleigh Regional, as soon as more information is published. I have no insider knowledge of the venue or the location, just that it is capped at 64, is being held on June 13th, starts at 10:30, and costs $40...

Wow X Wing really is for the rich huh ![]()
Higher fees so the TOs can buy play mats.
[Ducks under table to avoid incoming fallout]
$50 is too heavy to play X-Wing. The potential alternative ways to part with that amount of money are just too appealing. I get that competing is enjoyable, but I could attend 5 local tournaments instead. Pass.
Anyone know what the Monroeville, PA regional tournament is capped at?
Wow 50 is a lot. Are they offering to pay for the winner to go to gencon?

Yeah, it's a lot. It makes me wish they picked Atomic Empire as the venue as they can easily host 100+ players.
At least I have several places to crash in the area.
I want to find out if the fees are refundable if you can't make it. I have to talk with the Mrs, who is out of town. I don't want to plunk down $40 to find out I can't go and I can't get my cash back.
I just tried to call and got a busy signal and then got their "we aren't open b/c we can't get to the phone" message.

Just got through. It is held on premise, which is why it's capped at 64. They stated they will detail the complete prize support, but 1st place will get $400. Top 4 will get cash prizes. Other levels of top tier folk will get store credit. There will be raffles throughout the day.

You better start practicing...
I doubt I'll make Top 4, but I want to have fun. Just not sure if I want to go with a spoiler list or with something serious.
I do understand the costs of running large events, which this being on site are mainly paying a couple of employees to stay extra late & maybe come in early to set-up 32 tables. Maybe they are buying 32 of the FFG playmats...
. But if they aren't giving out at least $1400 in prizes, then they are using this event to make an extra profit (which as a player I don't like, but as a realist/capitalist I sorta understand).

I haven't talked with them yet this year, but last year they said they could support ~200 participants and as such would not be putting a cap on it.
The Madness (Plano TX) Regional will not be capped and only charged $10 for entry last year. I expect entry to be roughly the same this year.
Just FYI!

Cash prizes bring out the worst in people, this is a really bad idea. Cheating/Gaming the system/whining about every tiny bump of the table here they come... Hope their TOs are prepared for that.
