Politics

By T-800, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

To all the GM's out there, do you ever incorperate (sp?) current political events into your games? If so how do you do so?

Never, in my opinion real life politics belong there and not in the game - the point of the rp is escapism, after all.

That said, I have no problem using political events from middle or ancient history, as those are as good as fantasy for most people anyway. (and it is a great way to put my history major to use in the game)

Depends on what you mean by politics. I have (still vague) plans involving mutant uprisings involving car bombs, terrorist attacks, drugged child solders and other such horrors ripped from the world headlines. You don't need the look into the far future to find grim darkness, I'm sorry to say.

yes youre right...this world is sadly going very 40k...but wheres my plasma reactor!

Good point I did leave that a little vague. I mean where policies and political leader types are involved. From what I have read there is not overall governing framework that terra demands from its worlds, so long as they meet the minimum requirements for out put.

I keep actual politics far-far away from my gaming table.... since I want political discussions to be far-far away from my gaming tables. My players would "get the point", and after the game people would start to discuss this-and-that. Nope, not my dish for a relaxing evening.

Can't say that I've found much in the way of current political events to incorporate in my games. For instance, the palestine/israeli conflict is way too... "mundane" and uninteresting to write a scenario about. The same thing goes for 9/11 disaster, recent elections and all the bull about internet piracy (by the way, im pro piracy and anti-copyright).

It just doesn't cut it in the way of interest factor for Dark Heresy...

I don't bother with adding RL politics to my Dark Heresy games, even in parody, as, like Varnias, I find them to be too 'tame' and mundane to fit in with the sheer over-the-top grotesquerie of the 40k 'verse.

When I ran WFRP, however, I added quite a few touches from domestic (UK) politics as a hint of satire. For example, before the handover to FFG, and just after the announcement of the new Budget (at the time), I had a series of Altdorf riots, burning Imperial Chancellor Braun in effigy for raising the tax on ale by 3 pfennigs a pint (almost doubling the price). Add to that a number of parodies of the major UK political parties as the various power blocs on the various stadtsraad wherever I had the party wander, and you got a nice bit of verisimilitude

satirsticly it could be fun, but otherwise real polotics just dont have enough lasguns and chaos cultists involved
