Red eagle 1/144

By Pour Le Merite, in Wings of War (WWI)

Wow still lack many of the mostly used planes as models so I thought I should make a review of the alternatives. I will rather soon send an order to Reveresco so I can make a review of them too. The planes cost £3:50 but the freight is rather expansive so you need to buy a few to get the price each down.

I am Reviewing the Albatross DII (but it is a DIII in the picture of the unopened model).

First, the packet. You get the fusalage with the botton wing on, a Top wing, Struts and the wheels (3 parts). It is not that good controlled, my DII had a weird tail which took me some work. You also get decals. The instructions look a 10 year old kid did them.

The tools I have used for assembly and painting. Note that the superglue is a gel, if you use a regular superglue you are screwed .

To assemble the kit need quite a lot of work. It took me 20 minutes to glue it together but then I spent 10 preparing the parts to look as I expect of them. After that I used GWs green stuff to fix the tail (based on he blueprint of the plane). Then I painted it, put on the decals with humbrols decal fix (a must) and matt coted the whole thing.

The end result? It looks great, at least as good and as detailed as a Wow plane but it took a lot of hard work while a Wow plane looks good from the start. I can't reccomend Red eagle planes to anyone who doesn't have a lot of time on their hands. The tools and paints cost a lot of money also but if you already have them the plane gets a lot cheaper than a Wow plane.

If the plane exist in Wow you should buy it there, it is not worth the work the n. But if you like me think you misses so much of the war with the current Wow series only Red eagle is a good supplement.

A wow plane and a red eagle plame. A bit blurry picture, my camera sucks at close pictures.

I give Red eagle 3,5 out of 5. The end result is good if you know how to paint and the planes are easy to modify but the blueprint and the casting could be a lot better. Also I can't see why they had such a odd tail on the DII, luckily there is green stuff.

Looks good. One suggestion if you are not already doing it. Once I am satisfied with a model's paint and decals I hit it with a 1-2 light coats of Testor's "Dull Coat". Dries in 15-30 minutes. This will seal the paint and decals(blends them in) which protects it for handeling. I use dull coat as I prefer the no glossy military look on my minis.

Nice Job!

I use Humbrols matt cote instead, the result should be about the same. It keeps the paint-job in good shape. :)

Painting is the fun part, puzzling the model together and fixing problem with it is the large job. But, man... Albatross DII is one of the most beutiful planes ever made, it looks way cooler then the DIII or DV. A must for the WW1 games.

Red eagles DH2 however is h*ll on earth, putting those together was a lot of work. And we still have a Gotha to put together...
