My Gencon report

By Veinman, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Just got done with my first day of Gencon. I skipped yesterday. I am holding the quest compendium in my hands... :) It seems very nice. There is a quest from Kevin Wilson that requires EVERY expansion. A couple others require two, some one, and most just use the base game. The majority of them seem quite large as well. It was $30.

I also got an explanation of Sea of Blood from none other than Kevin Wilson himself. He's a nice guy, very approachable. We talked about Descent for a while. Anyway, Sea of Blood is essentially RtL on the sea. It doesn't require RtL, it's on its own along with base Descent. As far as I can tell it does NOT come with any new minis. No guarantee on that though.

The overland map is apparently from Runebound but I've never played that. There is a large island map and on the other side is an ocean map. The heroes have a ship that is upgradeable with cannons and other things. From time to time they land on islands and explore them. This is where the dungeons come in.

That's all I can think of for now. I snapped some pics of the game but they will have to wait until I get home.

You didn't happen to find out when the compendium will be available to the rest of us did you?!?!? :)

Would LOVE to get me hands on that!

Infact!! I will pay you $40 if you get me one and mail it to me! :)

Fascinating! I've been waiting all day for this promised report, and it’s good to hear some concrete details. Too bad it doesn’t seem to come with any minis or integrate with RtL specifically, but the seafaring idea, campaign features, and new cards sound like they can do a lot for any Descent game.

I know I’ll be trying to find a way to combine the overland maps from both games as soon as possible gui%C3%B1o.gif .

Awesome that you got to meet Kevin Wilson, by the way, can't wait to see more pics!

I'm serious by the way!!! $40!!!! :)

Thanks for the report.

I am a bit dissappointed that most quests in the compendium only use the base game. Yet, it is still a must have for me :P

Soylent- Sorry, I didn't see your request in time. I'm already back from Gencon. I've posted more details on what I saw, along with pictures. You can see them here: www.thegelatinouscube.com/2009/08/15/descent-sea-of-blood-expansion-details/

I also verified... no miniatures in Sea of Blood.

I went through the quests in the compendium to see what expansions are in use:

* Base game only: 7 quests
* Tomb of Ice: 4 quests
* Well of Darkness: 4 quests
* Altar of Despair: 3 quests
* Road to Legend: 2 quests

Only two quests use more than one expansion at the same time. One uses all of them, one uses Well and Altar.

Great pics.

Did you get any impression from either the game board or KW that this could be played alongside RtL? That board is awesome, way more than I expected. It almost looks like you could pretty easily just stick the SoB and RtL boards side by side and be able to use both, as long as there is one overland connection somewhere.

Actually, even if there isn't there you could do it. As long as they didn't change the glyph system, there would have to be another city on that map that contains the magic that runs the glphys. You could use that to move between the two boards. Like when leaving a dungeon, you could add a third option so it would be:

1) Return to Tamalir

2) Stay at the location

3) Return to X (SoB city)

Also if you stop in Tamalir you could choose to use the glyphs to move to the other board. The OL would have to get a similar system, maybe Lts at the OL's Keep could transport there or something. It could nerf the ability of the OL to end the game by destroying Tamalir, since he would actually have to destroy both places to destroy the magic that runs the glyphs.

I will definitely be buying this when it comes out. Hopefully they have given some consideration to being able combine the two advanced campaigns.

LOL - no worries!!! It will hopefully be in the store before too long here!

Nice to see the pics and all the info on the next expansion! Thanks for th pics!

I didn't get to ask him about mixing it with RtL. I would guess that the overall style of play is the same, so I suppose some house rules could do this. Off the top of my head I'd say that considerations would have to come in regarding the overlord plots at the very least. Also, you'd probably want the overlord to have two bases of operation from which he could deploy LTs.

Any guesses on something like this are premature. Maybe they've already worked it out.

yeah great pics and I will definately be working out a way to mesh this with RTL to add more options and a longer game. Man I cannot wait for this to come out! Descent is one of the best games out there PERIOD!!
