Online compatible?

By colonel blood, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I came back to WFRP at the beginning of V2 and it led me to find online playing communities which I've now been part of for five years.

Seeing as none of my real life friends roleplay this is vital for me to keep a hand in the hobby beyond reading the books on the toilet.

The new system, and I'm not saying it will necessarily be bad, doesn't look it will hold up too well to playing via messageboard what with all the dice pools and cardboard.

Any playtesters or FFG staff be able to tell me that's not the case?

I'm just a WFRP fan like yourself, but based on what I've seen, this game is designed for and probably best played face-to-face.

Online play should be possible. I think each of your players would need a copy of the game. The cards, some of them double-sided, are apparently an important aspect of play and contain a lot of information that, if you weren't familiar with the game already, would probably be really difficult and time-consuming to explain. But maybe not! It might be possible to summarize the card-based abilities easier than I'm expecting, making online play that much easier.

Rolling the dice online is possible, since they all appear to have the standard numbers of sides (6, 8 and 10). It would be a pain to try to translate several dice all at once, but it can be done. It would be cool if someone programmed a die-roller that spat out the correct symbols instead of numbers.

As much as it is heresy...

I would love a custom iPhone app to roll the new dice with the correct faces. I wonder if FFG would license that out. If it was in the App store it woujld be secure.

Well, assuming people will add the dice system to online dice rollers, I'm sure you'll be able to play online.

We play with MAPTOOL and it has a "dice picture" function. Not sure how trading cards will work for it though.

Since we now have a good look at the game, I think it should be easy enough to play on MAPTOOL. The dice function will probably just need a good macro. Since we have an online WFRP3 dice roller already, that code would probably work well :) http://www.gmtools.excelocms.com/

Otherwise, the other tracking stuff and whatnot is easy enough to do.

Thoughts?

Yes. That would be awesome.

If you ever get a passable MapTool version working please let us know. I don't have a local group, so any way I could play over the internet would be best. As you have said dice is not really a problem as there is a roller already and I am sure even more will spring up. I guess if I wanted to have my other players have their action cards I could always email them and have them cut them out. Wounds and the like could be handled on my side with me just describing criticals. So, basically the GM will have to probably handle more book keeping, but I am sure it could work.

We had a ton of fun playing WFRP2e on Maptool. The campaign file is in my sig if you want to test it out. I don't have anything yet for wfrp3, but i'm sure it will eventually ahppen. I've got a lot of international friends I like to game with :)
