Reducing and Returning

By Ender Dragon, in UFS Rules Q & A

Say my opponent has a Tiger Fury at 26 Damage. If I play an effect that says "Return this attack to it's printed damage" (i.e. Fight or Flight) isn't that just setting back to printed, and not actually reducing because there is no negative? It does say "Return" not "Reduce".

On the same note, there is a scout in my area that has ruled that if an attack is at 0 damage you can use Fight or Flight to reduce it back up to it's printed value. I was awful in math class, but isn't it impossible to "reduce" UP? It's an answer I'd like to print and take to him.

I know for a fact that you cannot "reduce" from 0 to printed. If it below printed dmg it will only get the printed dmg. So, for example alphard maliki is 2L6Dmg Throw. If your opponent reduces it by 5 dmg and tehn you FoF it will be at 7 dmg not 12.

actually it takes it back to printed dmg then doubles the printed dmg!! so if its 0dmg but the printed is six...it takes it back to 6 then doubles the printed dmg of the attack.

....reducing would imply making a number go down. You cannot reduce 0 to 6. But you can reduce 6 to 0.

Reducing and Returning are different, but that does not mean that a return ability cannot reduce damage. The best bet would be to look at Gaira, who responds after his attacks damage is reduced, and destroys a card that gives a damage bonus or penalty. Now in this case, any card that says return can trigger Gaira as long as his attacks damage is reduced by its effect, i.e. attack on 12 damage, printed 6 damage, holding ground. However such a card cannot be a target because it does not grant a bonus or penalty.

Also, Fight or Flight specifically says reduce, so if your attack is below or at printed damage, then fight or flight cant be used.

That's not entirely right babel, FoF can be used , but the "Reduce the damage" part will have no effect.
