Gen Con Disappointment

By Melonball, in Battlestar Galactica

They're demoing Pegasus, but not preselling any copies. Boo.

Oh... Did anybody get to demo it?

Does this mean the third cylon leader is known?

From BGG, seems like somebody got a copy of it (except if it's a joke of course).

I know they are demoing it on the floor, so its very possible that somone played.

Now maybe my information is wrong, but I got a phone call at 11AM from my friend who was there saying that Pegasus wasn't being sold, just demoed. Then again, maybe it sold out in two hours (this is possible who knows when he checked), or maybe its still being sold and my friend lied to suprise me (also possible, but more doubtful)

UPDATE: I read the BGG post and called up my friend. He says he went to the booth first thing when the hall opened and none were for sale. Last year the BSG games didnt come out until a little later in the day so maybe thats why he didnt see it. Hes checking back in tomorrow...hopfully they aren't all sold out

I don't know where you are getting your information but its all wrong.

The BSG Expansion was sold this morning and it was sold out super fast. A friend of mine who was there pick up a copy for both him self and me.

The last Cylon Leader is Leoben. His once per game ability is something to do with switch his hand with someone else, but i don't have the full details yet.

Now I have to wait for my friend to ship it to me!! **** LIVING IN CALIFORNIA!

I totally stand corrected then. My brother went to pick me up a copy this morning, and said he went there first thing when the hall opened and there was none for sale. It must have all been sold out by then

Here's hoping that my friend was able to pick up a copy, otherwise it's going to be a long wait until the release...

I was there by about 10:10am and there were STACKS of Pegasus...I picked up three copies for myself and some friends back home. Also picked up Middle Earth Quest (which I just played tonight and is AWESOME), Chaos In the Old World (which I am going to play with Eric Lang on Saturday) and Warhammer: Invasion. FFG had an amazing selection of pre-sales available. Now just got to haul it all home. Good thing the Pegasus boxes are super light.

They didn't have to sign some type NDA or non-resale agreement when purchasing these pre-releases, did they? I guess it doesn't really matter, would be impossible to enforce. One copy is already up for sale on ebay.

They couldn't make you sign any non-resell thingy. In the US everyone has first sale rights, which basically means you can resell anything you own.

Yeah, they are essential pre-release sales, so now all that information is available. I just wish some players would post some "first game" write-ups, as I'd like to hear how people like the game (and no, my buddy didn't pick me up a copy. Apparently it was more important to get Chaos in the Old World instead).

Here are the details of what went down:

The game went on sale at door open on Thursday. The line was about 45 minutes long when I got in and snaked back about 4 isles long. By 11:30 it was completely sold out. There was a restock on Friday (or so I was told) that sold out just as fast.

They were demoing Pegasus on the dealer floor all four days of the con, but they didn't have a copy in the FFG room until Saturday when they opened a copy for the play with the developer event in the afternoon. We then promptly wiped the floor with the cylons, though our friendly developer did throw me in the brig (I was Cain) and our cylon leader did win as well by assisting the humans quite admirably.

My take?

The additional characters are a lot of fun and add some needed flavor. Playing a cylon leader is HARD. You're not trusted by either side and your goals are pretty tough. We weren't sure a couple times which side he was playing. Overall it was tons of fun.

I managed to get my copy of the game first thing on Thursday morning. There was a massive stack of the game when I reached the booth, but about every other person had a copy (or two or three) in their hands to buy. I'm not surprised it sold out quick.

We played a game of it that night - five players, using all four of the new normal characters plus Leoben. Humans won, taking off from New Caprica losing no ships, but leaving Kat and Ellen Tigh behind to be executed (I was playing Ellen and shouting "Jump! Jump! Leave me behind... save yourselves!!!" as the Cylons were rounding the mass of civilian ships and few vipers ready to fight them off. After the two executions, we had 2 Population, 2 Morale, 3 Food and 1 Fuel. Ouch!

Here are some quick thoughts (note: this is after a single game, so take with a grain of salt):

Characters - Dee is amazing, being able to look at and move every ship when in Communications. Saved us a bit until she turned Cylon at the Sleeper phase. Ellen is a great character, but her ability to draw more skill cards only really works if she's not the President. She can't farm the Quarom Deck and use her great ability at the same time. Kat is okay - she doesn't end up doing anything better than Starbuck or Apollo can do. Cain is pretty good - her auto jump was very useful in our first turn as we got blasted by Cylons showing up. Her card set is a little more flexible than Bill's or Saul's.

Cylon Leaders - We only really saw Leoben, and he was a pain! His ability to mess with the destiny deck meant that we could not really count cards that way and try to figure out when bad cards were being played by hidden Cylons. He's great at keeping the other Cylon hidden. People who say the Cylon Leaders have the hardest job are right - it's just very tough when neither side trusts you and you have to run a crazy balancing act of helping and hurting both groups.

Pegasus - Never really mattered in our game. We didn't do anything with it and it never blew up.

New Caprica - Really favors the humans. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be this easy, but we just had every human go and prep the ships. Only one Cylon ever made it to the ships to destroy one before Galactica jumped back. Then, with three humans there, we launched all the ships up pretty easily before any more could be destroyed.

The game seems much harder for the Cylons when there's a Cylon Leader in the midst, because you may well end up playing one-down on the Cylon group. With five players, there was only one hidden Cylon and being able to figure out who that was early (thank you Quarom deck) meant we never had to worry about a second one out there. I'd have to play New Caprica a few more times to see if I like it or would rather leave it out and keep the old set. I do like the Trechery deck, though, and the new characters and Pegasus. Right now my weak link seems to be the Cylon Leaders taking the advantage away from the Cylons and giving it to the humans, and New Caprica being more human-beneficial.

What triggers first? Dee's power, or the person activating communication?

It's been clarified that Dee's power only works when SHE activates Communications.

I went to Gen Con hoping that pegasus woud be on pre-sale just like bsg last year. At first I thought that it wasn't on sale until I took another look, the box is the same size and the picture is different but kinda similar, in the excitement (the running of the conventioneers),of the opening of the exhibit hall, I almost missed the expantion, thinking it was bsg, Yes i did get a copy and had an incredible opportunity to play bsg with the expantion with one of the co-creators on Saturday (not a demo the whole game). I picked one of the cylon leaders, an incredibly challenging character to play, because of the balance that the cylon leader has to achive in order to win.(NOT FOR A NEW PLAYER TO PLAY). A truely awsome way to learn how to play and ask questions. (also played Tide of Iron against both of designers). As board gamer, to me, this was the best guest celerberties ever at gencon. just wish i had brought pegasas to be signed.sad.gif I hope FFG will continue to have there disigners play their games in the future.
