From the rumours, I'm getting the impression that this will be the ultimate verison of Warhammer Quest / Hero Quest that my friends have been waiting for all these years.

As has been mentioned this isn't the first rpg to use special dice/cards/gimmicks. That doesn't mean it will suck. Now the promo material looks far too boardgame-like for my taste, but there's so little material that making any kind of judgment is premature. I'm sitting at "cautiously optimistic, not favorably impressed by the first tidbits."
May I say that you do not live up to your forum-name?

You may.
To be serious, Fantasy Flight does know the difference between an RPG and a boardgame and while what I've seen so far looks too gimmicky for my taste, I haven't seen much. The purpose of cards and custom dice are to create a more immersive game environment. I hope it works.
Now they are eating the sacred cow by diverging from the 1st Edition game mechanics (2nd was really a cleaned up and improved 1st), but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The game has always had problems with handling noncombat skill use (1st edition was bad, 2nd edition was somewhat better) and the critical hit system basically worked like "out of wounds, 1st critical hit impairment, 2nd gruesome death" which wasn't really that different from other systems except for the flavor text. As to the actual number of careers, it depends on how the career system works. If they condense wizard into a single career and slayer into another, for example, we could actually be getting more not less.
I have to admit I've really enjoyed reading these forum posts from before the 3rd edition was released. I can't believe people have such strong opinions about how it sucks WITHOUT EVEN SEEING THE RULES much less playing it. There are people passing judgement based on the sentence on the back of the box and comparing it to the pitch on v1.
"They're called heroes on the back of the box. They should be lowly rat chatchers. THIS SUCKS!"
"It has weird dice. It's obviously a boardgame. THIS SUCKS!"
"It has cards. THIS SUCKS"
"The picture on the box has some heroes on it. THIS SUCKS!"
You guys are hilarious! Plus the way you make statements about things you know nothing about makes you look like total nobs which amuses me too.
Thanks for the entertainment :-)
