New Player question re: Gencon

By Eldil, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Salutations,

Though I bought the Core Set almost a year ago, and I've kept up on the Chapter Packs, I've actually only played the game 6-7 times (I moved, and then the local group dried up).

I'll be at Gencon, and I planned to play in the "Core Set challenge," but I'm also tempted to sign up for the LCG melee tournament. I had a couple of questions:

1. Is the presence of an amateur in a melee tournament going to irritate the other players at the table? I'm hoping to meet some people in the AGoT community, and I don't want to tick them off.

2. What would be the easiest/most fun house for an amateur to play in the melee tournament setting? I'm favoring Stark, figuring that if I can't achieve victory, violence is a nice substitute.

Thanks,

Nate

The presence of an amateur should not bother anyone too much. And if it does, they should get over it. Pacing is likely to be the biggest issue for all involved. The more you play, the faster an individual turn will go. This may put you in an awkward position of getting too much "advice" for what to do next.

Stark is good for a first foray. In addition to the violence, they are pretty good at defending against everything except intrigue.

i doubt anyone will care about your play history. on fact i think they will be more impressed that you stepped up to the game and would appriecate you being there. Though like ktom said, you will get a lot of advice (everyone will in melee) and remember to take it all with a grain of salt or two.

Stark is pretty interesting in melee (and i think better there then in joust) and don't believe the hype about lack fo intrigue icons. You could always make it winter, put a card in shadows and play this Catelyn Stark .

Thanks for the responses, guys. I appreciate it. See you at Gencon.
