The Rate of Career Progression

By Minxy2, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

I have been running a really successfull DH game this year and he guys have (just) survived all that has been thrown at them from all of the premade adventures and now are resting nicely on their 6th level career level. In game time only 2 years has passed (I like to factor in and accentuate the extended travel times in DH), but they are already into specialist categories of their chosen careers. This just seems really fast too me. Wouldn't it take a lot longer to reach these levels ?

The guys have really earnt their rewards so far with great dramatic playing and smart decisions, so I don't want to give them less rewards then what they have earnt (500 XP for a normal adventure + any good decisions or roleplaying, though to 1000 XP for Tattered Fates). I am all for the PC glow and truly remarkable player characters (hell one killed himself for the good of the party because he found out he was the scion of Haarlock and was ressurected by a mysterious power, now they consider him a saint...or his he :), but career progression to me just seems to fast.

Are these career's as far up as they will be able to go or will they be extended later on? What do you other GM's out there think or do about career progression?

Well, when they survive everything than they can get in only two years in-game up to rank 6.

Fact is, that after Rank 8 your PCs are considered Inquisitor-material. In my opinion that is too early. Sure, there are GMs who make it hard to get a single XP, but if you design one big campaign against one major organisation (i have one against the Logicians), your PCs can earn up to 10k in XPs. So, what do you do when you want to run a second campaign of similar size?

I came up with the idea to allow my PCs to activate an alternative Rank. Like a Guardsmen who went Stormtrooper can go Scout-Sniper.

After all. some players also want to advance their chars in a non-standard way, say a Guardsman who is good in talking. Now, with advances starting for 500 XPs up to 2500 .... thats a lot of points. They would have to spend 4750 XP (nearly a third off all their XPs to rank 8) in just one attribute. It seems unfair to me hinder char development so why not let them earn more than 15k XP and simply play on.

Inquisitor-material, yes, but only skillwise. I hardly believe that Inquisitor promotes acolytes based only how skilled they are. The politics involved play a so much greater role than skills do, and an acolyte might have to prove his/her worthyness, piousness and sticking to the "right" principles for decades before the Inquisitor deems he or her to be a worthy candidate to promote.

I mean, you're about to give one of the greatest seats of power in existence to this individual, you'd want to be REALLY sure that this person about to recieve it has the right thinking and right opinions. Otherwise you'd run the risk of creating yet another radical madman, that will cause the Imperium and the Inquisition more pain than they already have to deal with.
