Hi everyone

By ingsve, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

So, it's been over two years since I last touched my AGOT cards...But a few days ago I took them out and started going through them again. Brings back alot of memories...

So, I thought I'd stop by to see what's going on. Alot has changed in the last two years it seems. Are people still playing the game? I see some familiar people at least. I'm guessing alot of people quit and metas died?

Ingsve! Long time, no see, man! Great to have you posting again. Think we can talk you into sticking around? I've got the feeling that AGOT is moving ahead in a good way right now after the announcement on the Princes of the Sun expansion.

I'll try to peak in from time to time. I don't have any clue about what the game is like at the moment though. My meta died completely over two years ago so there's noone I know that's still playing.

I'm going to try and get some old decks buildt and see if anyone is interested in playing around a little with the old sets.

I have to admit that I'm playing less these days, but things are certainly looking interesting with what's coming up.

Well, there are some distinctions.

The game isn't dead. It actually seems to have done pretty well in the new format.

What the old CCG crowd would recognize as the competitive play environment is pretty well dead, though. That's not to say there aren't ANY events, tournaments, etc., but they tend to be smaller, local affairs with very little travel. The competitive community has gone from a large national/international community that discusses and argues strategy at the card, deck and event level to a much more local, grass-roots affair. There really isn't a lot of discussion or life on the boards, for example.

So the game isn't dead, but what you would recognize as the board community from 2 years ago is.

Kevin, I see that you're still the staple of the rules discussion board so some things never change at least.

and nice to see you Travis...

And Greyjoy just got a shot in the arm with their stand alone expansion - though I'm somewhat surprised at what wasn't reprinted. i still remember your nasty GJ rush deck

Ah, ya that was a fun deck. Speaking of fun decks...Is characterlite viable in any house in the new format?

Welcome back to the game Ingsve, i remember that Greyjoy deck too. And i also remember our game at Stahleck - Melisandre VS. 20 or so renown power charachters on the Greyjoy hordes. :-)

Charachter-lite in the form we had in the past isn“t viable today. The closest startegies are Targaryen jumpers for old nowadays offcicial unsupported standard format and some sort of Greyjoy discard which can be build with fewer charachters than an average deck.

Too bad. Characterlite was always my favourite decks to play. Before my meta died I was working on a Baratheon characterlite but I never got to test it out...

I wonder if the designers has something against characterlite...Imo it should always be a viable version of it in the game...Ah well.

Character-lite is relatively viable (depending on your definition of "lite")... characterless is not. There just hasn't been enough time for the LCG development cycle to have put out enough cards to support a characterless deck adn at the same time support the various, and much more popular, builds for the 6 houses.

I don't doubt at some point that by most definitions character-lite will be viable again for a several houses, probably by this time next year. I do have some doubt how viable character-less would be. The general power level of the game has dropped a bit, and without some serious power cards removing characters completely from the a deck is likely to spell disaster for a long while.

Well, my definition of characterlite is basically a deck without characters that need to be marshalled into play. My decks usually revolved around jumpers, war horses, token characters and locations turning into characters etc. I guess almost all of those cards are rotated...Also needed is heavy character control. Not only resets in plot or dominance but more importantly during marshalling and challenges. That might be the biggest weakness right now. I'm not sure since I din't know exactly what cards are reprinted or replaced in the LCG format.

If that is the case then, no I don't believe character-lite is viable right now. Targ has some jumpers, also Ambush haracters that jump in (but don't really jump out without some help), Greyjoy shares one with Targ, and there are the Reinforcement events... but no one House has enough at will non-situational character control to be able to make a deck like this viable right now. The best character control in the game requires winning challenges or your opponent's character having a low strength or a lot of influence.

Now if you were to switch up your definition a little to just a very low amount of marshalled characters (Say 10) I think you could probably make a pretty interesting deck.

Hmm, that would have been fun but I think my first problem is cards, in that the most recent cards I have are House of Talons...Then there is the question of time and money which I'm not sure hoe it will be in december.
