I got Runebound as a gift and a few of the expansions, and after learning the base game with my buds, I was over-excited to add the expansions! God this game is up there with the others!
Fun in a box
I have to admit that I too really enjoy this game! It was a Christmas gift a couple years back and I even managed to snag a copy of Midnight at RETAIL in my FLGS, just cause. I really enjoy this every time I play it, and dont even mind the epic time needed to finish it on occasion, a great time around the table IMHO.
This sounds like this may be my next game purchase. I do like the fact that it can be played solo as well.
I am thinking about getting this game. My wife is very intrigued by the description in the catalog. Question though. I keep seeing that it plays well solo. Does that mean that the core play is a co-op experience?
Because if it is something that two of us can play against the board like Arkham Horror, I might as well order it now.

It's not a co-op, but you don't have to engage in any player versus player combats either if all participants agree. Everyone is trying to accomplish the same end goal; but one players success in getting closer to the goal doesn't make it easier for the other players to get there. Each player has to achieve the same basic things: gain allies and increase their hero's abilities, then get strong enough to take on the red bad guys in the end game.
But keep in mind that the game isn't just about "beating the game" and winning, it's also designed as an RPG hybrid and the journey to the end is to be appreciated as much as knocking off the dragonlord. A little RPGing in RB goes a long way to making it a quite fun and enjoyable experience.
Torbal. Thanks a bunch. I think this might be coming to the Long house for the holidays.
just a hint. go easy on the expansions. I mean, I was over happy with the game when I got it which made me add most expansions aswell but in the end it just made it too messy at once. Not saying the expansions are BAD in any way, in fact I LOVE them. But at least I feel I should have waited untill I really REALLY was getting kinda tired with the original and needed some variation
Personally I've gotten in the habit of customizing the adventure decks with the expansions. Take out the older challenges and cycle in newer ones. Keeps things fresh without massive adventure decks.
I agree that you might want to wait on the big box expansions until you have a very solid understanding of the core rules and you feel the need for some more variety... but I really loved all of the small card deck expansions.
Personally, I think including all the small card expansions will really help keep the core game fresh. With so many encounters to draw you'll usually be facing something new every game.
The same is true with the market deck but you don't burn through them nearly as fast and there are sooooo many if you get all the add-ons. My market deck stack is about 20cm (8") tall! So I ended up breaking it down to 3 stacks of weapons/armor, magic and allies. I actually really like this house rule.
I really recommend all the encounter add-on decks.
