How cut-throat are regionals?

By Skaak, in Warhammer 40,000: Conquest

I don't have a lot of opportunities to play Conquest thanks to time limitations and not having anyone else on hand who likes it. Do you think I would still have fun playing in a regional tournament? I'm knowledgable about the rules and decent at deckbuilding, but I'm unsure how competitive regionals tend to get (never having had a chance to go to an LCG tournament before).

Not sure if attending the regional would be jumping into the deep end in a bad way, or if it would be a positive experience; if anyone else has experience with FFG regionals, I'd love to hear your opinions. :)

I've been to a few Netrunner tournaments (only one Regional, but also Chronos Protocol, which was a similar size).

People do play to win, so there will be very competetive and very strong players there.

That said, GO. You will likely lose quite a few games, but you will learn so much about the game by playing with experienced players, and just playing the game a lot. And there won't ONLY be super-strong players there, so in the later rounds you should end up paired with people at a similar skill level. Plus, if you enjoy the game you'll have a blast just being able to play it all day :)

Everyone at the Netrunner events I've always found to be amazingly friendly and it's always been a positive experience for me. I imagine Conquest will be the same (something about having no prize money on the line seems to keep people grounded and sportsmanlike :) )

Yeah everybody is friendly and positive altough as mentioned they are also there to win. It's not a really social club like having a drink with friends imho but it's social enough to make you have a nice day.

I'd say it like this:

- During games, no one is a friend

- Between games, everyone is a friend

- Very few people, at any time, are outright jerks

..... I imagine Conquest will be the same (something about having no prize money on the line seems to keep people grounded and sportsmanlike :) )

Well said.

One of the many reasons that I don't attend tournaments, but would rather play casual or simply "competitive" games that don't have too much **** riding on the win/loss ratio..... and when you get to my age, fun is of paramount importance. :)

Thanks for the advice! I have absolutely nothing against playing against people who are in it to win; it's just when the majority of people are so focused on winning that they're jerks about it that I don't see the point in participating. Being friends between games is fine by me. :D

Looks like I'll be playing at the Evergreen Tabletop Expo , then! If you're a Pacific Northwestian perhaps I'll see you there.

You'll come back home with more knowledge of the game your going to play. New tactics, better understanding, new deck ideas ect. Always good.

I entered my first Conquest tournament last month, and I was winless with my DE deck, but I still had fun because most of my opponents were very cool guys (except one, that is). When you have fun even when you lose, that means the community is great and the people are nice.

FFG has three 'tiers' of Organized Play. Regionals are considered "Premier" level events, meaning they are competitive and that players should know the ins and outs of the rules.

That being said, if you don't, people will be around to help you! Very few people are jerks, and most jerks get ostracized until they become non-jerks. However, don't expect your opponent to help you during the game. If you make a mistake, you make a mistake. I always make a point to talk to my opponent after the game about how it went and, if they are newer, I'll offer advice and take a look at their deck (if they'll let me) and make suggestions and explain the reasoning behind card choices.

Just go. You'll probably get some promos, maybe win a mat, and maybe make some friends! Just be aware that (like others have said) during the game, it is not a social event.
