Why aren't more people talking about the Rogue Shadow?

By WonderWAAAGH, in X-Wing

With all this hubbub over wave 7 spoilers, I feel like there should be at least some minute consideration for the Rogue Shadow. Juno Eclipse being a potential Advanced pilot (depending on how much credibility you lend to the photos circulating) indicates that they've at least combed through TFU for a potential source of new material. Is the obvious staring us in the face, or is it just wishful thinking?

Large base ship with cloaking?

More pointedly, the shadow was Vader's sneeky secret, or working for the alliance. I got the impression it wasn't mass produced.

I'd say the biggest thing keeping it out of the game is its size. Listed as 65 meters long, that's almost double the falcon.

Now that cloaking has been toned down considerably, I see no issue on that front. While I agree with the latter point, fluff needn't get in the way of good game design.

I'd considered that too, but we're still talking about fictional ships. Size is relative, and the scale has been known to be skewed. It does still pose a problem, but it's one I can be forgiving of.

Well to make it feasible you'd have to use the more sensibly sized TFU II version. On top of that we're not even sure what the thing's armed with last I checked. It never shot at anything in the games, that's for sure.

That, and... Well... Some of us kinda' want to forget about TFU.

It is a nice looking ship though.

Why? It was a great game. The first one, anyways. Never bothered with the second.

We'd need a new, new cloak rule like they did to the large base barrel roll. Maybe allow a 1 straight instead of the 2.

Don't. Whatever you do, please, please don't. It completely ruins everything that made the first one good.

Again, why? I've heard people talk up the new cloak rule like it's the best thing to happen to blocking since sliced bread, but it has to be the dullest of silver linings I've seen in this game to date. I think the gap in design philosophy between the shuttle and Aggressor proves that a turret-less, large base ship needs a healthy dose of gimmicks (actions, upgrades, abilities) to make it viable. Why can't we consider cloak in that sort of light?

Noted, will not play #2.

I have to admit, my objection is based on the errata to barrel roll. If it was broken with the 1 straight then a 2 would be worse.

Now, perhaps if it had no guns and functioned as a support ship similar to the transport...

I don't recall the Moldy Crow doing much shooting either, but then it's been a while. I do seem to recall, however, a recent discussion about the merits of anti-air armaments on a Star Wars ship that wasn't designed as an air superiority fighter. So if we can suspend some disbelief for the K-Wang, I see no reason why we can't do the same for the Rogue Shadow.

We haven't really had a large base support ship since the shuttle, so why not? There would have to be something balanced out of the equation to make room for the cloak, as unimpressive as it may be in its current form.

Cloaking on a large ship would almost certainly need to use the regular large ship barrel roll or something like that, because otherwise it would be insane! Or at least that's how it seems. Perhaps playtesting would prove otherwise? I dunno. Certainly willing to give it a shot though.

I LOVED TFU. I Even likes TFU2, though it absolutely felt rushed and incomplete. Starkiller is probably my favorite character in the entire Star Wars Universe. I really REALLY want to see him show up in FFG's Star Wars. This means here in X-Wing, but especially in Imperial Assault. Imagine him fighting against an AT-ST! OMG!!!!!

Here's what we'd need for the Rogue Shadow.

  • We'd need Juno Eclipse to be the highest PS pilot,
  • Which could mean that FFG is now allowing pilots to have multiple ships they can pilot - Which should give Corran Horn fans much rejoicing amirite? Personally I think giving you the option of putting any particular pilot in more than 1 ship is just fine with me.
  • We'd need both Starkiller and Proxy as pilots (probably). We don't know how good they were, but they are likely both capable. I'd guess Starkiller the lowest Pilot Skill, but give him some really cool ability like a Force Crush. (Instead of attacking, simply assign 1 damage).
  • We know Vader had killed multiple pilots before Juno showed up - So the generics could be those un-named pilots.

You forgot the man himself, Rahm Kota. Even without Juno (who I admit would be an interesting first choice for cross-ship piloting) there should be enough material left over to flesh out a release.

I have been wanting this ship for awhile. One can hope.

Because, outside of this forum, I have never heard of it.

Well, The Crow shot more times than the Rogue Shadow ever did, and actually visibly killed at least one TIE Bomber, and was implied to have downed at least one TIE Interceptor and a pair of TIE Fighters. On top of that The Moldy Crow always had a turret on the bottom, so we do know indeed that it was always armed and did use its guns. But I don't really see how that's relevant.

I do wonder what The Rogue Shadow would use as a weapon. Allegedly it has laser cannons but I'm not even sure how powerful they'd be.

I've only played TFU #2. Enjoyed it?

Sorry to hear that. I feel like everyone should play through TFU once, if for no other reason than the story. One need not care about what is or isn't canon to enjoy a good story.

And it was pretty good, though I didn't dig it as a Rebellion origin story. But **** was the gameplay fun. Except for Kashyyyk.

Screw that level.

TFU 1 was revolutionary. You could destroy so much, and with so much detail. And Sam Witwer really sold that character too. Love that man.

I didn't buy the transition to the light side though.

"I can feel its pain."

Yeah. Yeah the Sarlaac you roasted earlier. NOW you care?

But yeah Witwer's good.

Wasn't he blind when he was running around with Starkiller? So he would have a hard time flying.

Yeah, but he's also one of those... uh, darn, what do you call those space wizard samurai things... uh...
