Boomer in the Brig

By gurkenblatt, in Battlestar Galactica

Hey there,

I hope I am the first to ask this question, I certainly haven't found it by searching the forums.

But probably I'm not, since the question should arise pretty often.

I played Boomer in our last game and was thrown into the brig in the sleeper phase, according to my character flaw.

The Brig location says, that the players in it do not draw a crisis card.

But one of Boomer's advantages is that she can, at the end of her turn, look at the crisis card on top of the stack (it says "look", not "draw") and either leave it there or put it on the bottom.

The question now: Is this "looking" also a "drawing"?

My first reaction was "no", since it is called "looking", not "drawing" and since I was fairly certain that this phrasing targets explicitly the "draw crisis card" step.

As I was innocent (i.e., human), I thought that the brig should not cancel this advantage. But other players then stated that, if she really WAS a Cylon, Boomer could do a lot of harm even from the brig with that ability and nobody could counter that.

So, whats your opinion on this?

And sorry again if this has already been asked, then I am stupid and blind.

The card says "look" and is not linked to drawing crisis cards. Roslin's ability, for example, is specifically tied to drawing a card so it wouldnot be used while she is in the brig. Boomer can use her ability in the Brig.

Maybe it will be harmful to the humans but it is no different than any other player in teh Brig launching Scouts and burying good cards.

The main function of the Brig is to cancel the potency of the Cylon reveal action. It is not meant to shut everything else down.

Boomer is still useful while in the Brig, of course in the expansion if she sits in the brig using her power we might consider throwing her out an Airlock! :P

Like most characters boomer is pretty well designed to be a double edged sword. If she is human her abilities can help the humans a lot, if she is cylon she can hurt the humans a lot. Unfortunately for me a I rarely get to use character powers for evil as I am automatically assumed to be a cylon. I've stopped keeping track of exact numbers but I think I have been human the entire game for about 5 of the last 30 games I've played. Alternately I have been a cylon the entire game for about 15-20 of the last 30 games. As much as I like playing both Boomer and Baltar I've pretty much given up on playing them as the extra loyalty card would pretty much ensure I would spend most of the game in the brig.

Boomer's ability applies while she is in the brig. So does any other action with the ACTION label that she has access to as well as an effect that her cards permit- e.g., Evasive Maneuvers, Launch Scout, etc. The brig specifically prohibits the draw of a crisis card that the players must then deal with, but not the use of her Intuition ability, which is independent of the crisis card step. This applies as well to Starbuck's ability.

LOL. Tell that to players stuck in the Brig for frakkin forever!
