N-1 Starfighter: More proof Lucas doesn't listen
Gimme a couple days and I'll fix you somethin' up. Won't be 3D... But you've inspired it.
EDIT: Eh I'm too lazy. Your #1 problem was trying to keep smooth shapes. Y-Wing that fuselage and X-Wing that Cockpit and it's a done deal. No roundness needed, but all the attitude remains.
Edited by Captain LackwitI tried that and liked the results but found if you get rid of the curves it is a slab sided fighter with twin forward guns and large engines to either side and i already have a Y Wing.
I think the N1 was just a lazy design. a later period Dan Dare ship procreated with an ME262 and the N1 was the result. Though it was not as lazy a design as the podracer that was simply an A10 Warthog reversed. There is no excuse for that *L*
I don't think it's a lazy design.
I think it's a pretty cool one, evoking the days of 50's sci-fi, thus evoking the image of something older, yet at the same time something made in a prosperous future. It fit the bill perfectly.
I fail to see what's lazy about the design. It's smooth, streamlined and... To my knowledge I really can't recall any ship that looks like it. It's pretty **** original.
I think the problem was that you started with a faulty premise, Gosric - that the N-1 isn't a gorgeous Star Wars ship already. I think it's funny how everyone harps on the astromech difficulties with the N-1, and I get that, but I don't see those same people harping on how S-foils make no sense whatsoever (which they don't), or the B-wing's shape being completely ridiculous (which it is), or the TIE fighter being ludicrous in its visibility. Yeah, the astromech droid problem is dumb, but it's no dumber than a dozen other things from the OT. People just hate the N-1 because they hate the Phantom Menace.
I hadn't seen the Phantom Menace in over a decade, so I bought the HD version on amazon and watched it last night. I was watching it going "This isn't as bad as people say it is..." and then I got to Jar Jar and I was like "Holy cow...I don't even know if I can finish this." And then I spend the movie thinking "Could Jar Jar be cut out and the movie still work?" The answer to that question was, "Yes, he serves no real purpose whatsoever." And then Anakin showed up and I was like "Ugh...what if we just cut Anakin Skywalker out too?"
It's a bad movie, there's no getting around it, but that doesn't make the ship a bad design.
aye, the n-1 is a cool ship minus some incredibly stupid astromech fen-angling that could easily be fixed in post
if you want an example of a lazy ship design, I submit episode 3's arc. It's an x-wing and a snow speeder super-glued together in a movie that rips off the Empire Strikes Back like a drowning man gasps for air. They did add an extra wing, though...

What exactly is the problem - do we see the astromech's legs poking out of the bottom? If not, isn't the whole thing hidden away inside the cockpit, ie invisible in the film?

There's a fan edit out there that removes jarjar and puts all three films into one film cutting out all the worst parts but largely keeping the narative, the phantom menace is about 7 minutes of the thing over all.
When I was watching, I came up with an admittedly trope-y, but far superior alternative to their Tatooine stuff. Picture no Jar Jar, and instead of Anakin talking Sebulba down as a ten year old talking to a scum spacer, replace Queen Amidala getting into trouble with some local toughs and a teenage Anakin dealing with them, either with quick blaster work or force persuasion. Now, you have a reason for them to have "feelings" for one another, and then you'd have Obi Wan having to deal with trying to manage a couple of teenagers, one a queen, and the other a local street tough who knows his way around pods enough to get them out of their predicament. Also, remove Qui Gon, sot that you end up setting up Obi Wan and Anakin's friendship. Bam! So much better in my opinion.
The thing is ship aesthetics like anything else are a matter of personal eye. To me the N1 isnt interesting. Which i can say about most of the designs from the prequels and especially TPM. But that is just a personal opinion. I dont criticize anyones tastes for liking it. Though I think Doug Chiang watched Nausicaa in the valley of the wind one too many times.
As for story flaws there were many But the whole accidentally taking off and accidentally flying to the main enemy ship and accidentally flying into the bay and accidentally activating the shields and asccidentally turning the ship to accidentally fire into the reactors and accidentally flying out again made me cringe. I know he has a high bacteria count but seriously?

I don't like the Phantom Menace (I really want to, but can't because of Jar Jar, acting, overuse of CGI, etc), but that's not the reason I don't like the N-1. I don't like its design. All of the Galactic Civil War ships are unique, but the N-1 would stand out like a sore middle finger. Same goes for the ARC-170, which besides the above also has the privilege of looking both ridiculous and hideous. For as much as the N-1 doesn't belong in a game about the GCW, I admit at least that ship is pretty.
What do you think of the Vaksai? That's one of my new favorite minis after buying one of Mel's. It's got a lot going on with it, and I'd view it as the opposite of the N1. Well, maybe not. Maybe the K-wing is the polar opposite of the N1.

That's fair enough. It does look different to the established GCW canon. I wonder though, if that's partially the CGI at fault. I'd love to see a kitbashed version of the N1, with more in the way of panel lines and the like. I think that would leave the possibility for fitting in better with the GCW stuff.

front page
it is absolutely invisible for anyone just watching the film, but you'd need to widen the ship's dimensions a little to actually fit r2-d2 in it
it's a very easily addressed problem and the OP brought it to our attention as an example of Lucas' completely obstinate ways ![]()
Man why do you guys hate the ARC-170 so much? I really don't get that. I love that thing.
I like some of it. but the guns seem a little flimsy on the wing attachments and the nose is weird. Also the s foil thing seems a little contrived. But i like the engines and the basic shape
I think the ARC's also a cool ship, mostly out of nostalgia for the X-wing. When I was a kid, I actually thought that it was the predecessor instead of the Z-95.

It looks like they tried too hard to be reminiscent of the x-wing. The engines are waaay too big and the s-foils are too small and the nose is just...off.
Beef up the s-foils a bit so they look more balanced with the main wing, swap out the one big engine for 2 smaller ones, x-wing style and make the nose... I don't know, less beaky, and I think I would really like it.
As with most of the stuff in the prequels, there are some good ideas in there, but it just seems like they couldn't be bothered to develop them decently and instead just phoned it in.

Well, both are.

Wait a minute, you're telling me, honestly telling me, that we have rules for S-Foils now? If so I find that incredibly humorous. As for the gigantic engines, I like it. It does what it needs to, which is evoke the image of a big powerful thing. Dunno' bout you dude but those engines look like they haul major rear. The beaky nose reminds me of a birdy of prey, as does the wingspan/size and general angle, with the S-Foils looking like small feathers on it.
Basically the ARC-170 looks like a big meaty metal eagle.
Which is awesooooooooooooome.
Those 6 wings look like they were made to flap like an insect so it could get airborne. It looks stupid.
It's ugly it was in one fight where it died horribly why would anyone give two hoots about it?
The N1 looks like it does because they were designed with Nubian Star Drive (not based on Naboo). The Naboo, as depicted in Darth Plagieus, have (or had at the time) an isolationist streak from the rest of the galaxy and a great desire to hold onto the past, as you can see from their architecture. As a result they very much wanted to make their ships theirs, hence not buying Z-95s. The N1 isn't a ship built for military efficiency, it's built for maximum power and to show off. It's less comparable to a military craft and more comparable in design philosophy to the StarViper: they're not being mass produced across the galaxy so quality takes priority over efficiency.
Considering Naboo is the birth place of the Emperor I would imagine it has a sizable Imperial garrison to protect it from agitators.
Any N-1s on Naboo are probably for ceremony/propaganda.
Palpatine's not very attached to the place.
As for statting it? 2/2/2/2 with an M-3A or TIE fighter dial, astromech and torpedo slot, focus, target lock and one of the maneuverability actions.
Dude nah, 3 agility.

It's a good thing we never saw an X-Wing get shot down.

2. It's not better than the X-wing, and it's certainly not on par with the A-wing.
