N-1 Starfighter: More proof Lucas doesn't listen

I don't get why they didn't just rotate the droid 90 degrees.

Ninja'd. This. Exactly this. Derp.

I'm not visualizing this properly I don't think. What would this do, and why would it be good?

why would you want your navigational computer/repairman to have his head sticking out where it can get shot off anyway?

Because, as shown in ANH, the droid has several attachments that enable it to enact in-flight repairs and hold the ship together. I have a theory that a droid can have its head blown off and still be able to store hyperspace coordinates, because the memory and computer for them doesn't need to be up there where the cognitive stuff is.

Right though these seem to involve interacting with wires and panels visible on the X-wing which do not seem to exist on the N-1.

I never liked that naboo thing. It's just to pretty to fit into the star wars universe that lives in my mind.

Then the legs, instead of facing the sides, would face the fore and aft of the starfighter and could thereby fit inside the fuselage without the droid acting like Mr. Fantastic.

Since the dome rotates a full 360o, the orientation of the body doesn't matter as much.

Turn the R2 body 90 degrees so the legs face fore and aft. It looks like it would fit fine in that configuration.

Ohhh. The astromech. I stupidly thought this was about a droid fighter. That makes SOOOO much more sense.

It would make the Legs and feet fit into the narrower fuselage neatly... If they are not on the sides they dont need to be put on the bottom of the ship with a telescopic head. Its such an easy solution you really ask yourself why the designer did not come up with it himself... So we would not have to complain about Lucas

I think the issue though is that the droid slot is a perfect circle snug to the droid's head. So no matter how you rotate the droid, it would tear the droid's legs off. You'd have to have slots fore and aft to accommodate the legs, which is what Lucas refused to do.

On the X and Y the location of the Astromech socket, dorsal and near to exposed components makes sense. At least within the context of SW tech. Having it on a wing with no exposed panels or in a tube like a victorian guttersnipe stuck in a chimney makes no sense. If the droid repair arms cannot reach everything they need to then why have them. The space could be used for a computer bank that holds plenty of hyperspace cordinates negating the whole need for an R unit. If you have to have an Astromech and i suppose for story then you do then the effort needs to be made to do it in a feasible way. I hate design cheats and lazy work

The opening at the top doesn't matter - the droid was loaded into the N-1 from underneath it. All the arms need to do is rotate the droid when pulling it up the chute, before its head pops out.

Ah, got it.

When he first said it, I visualized rotating the droid so that it was lying down with its head sticking out one side, and that didn't make any sense at all. Then I thought it meant lying the droid down so that it's head was pointed forward, which made more sense, but still not much.

It was that third axis though.

It take J.J. Abrams to bring peace between George Lucas and Doug Chiang:

EDIT: Sorry, the image should have had a spoiler alert. (Hobojbus, can you remove?)

No it's been months it's still stupid looking.

What the hell is that thing?

What the hell is that thing?

astromech of Brazilian make

I don't get why they didn't just rotate the droid 90 degrees.

It worked for the Mini ( except that was the engine - we didn't get astromechs in them until 2001 )

JJ and Doug Chiang. Terrifying combo

Really? What purpose does this thread actually serve..?

Entertainment, are you not entertained?

Entertainment, are you not entertained?

Not particularly no.

It probably should be in the off topic section. But at least it is SW related. And it relates to design which sort of relates to miniatures and therefore sort of relates to X Wing (six degrees of relevance)
