The last line on internal struggles from sf07 has me confused. Does it mean I pick the number of cards in my hand or my opponents hand? Was there an errata to clarify this and I don't know about it? Thanks in advance.

The "either" is extraneous, and shouldn't be there.

So in both instances the X should be the number of cards in your hand.
