I think I have more issues with the fact that every idea I heard thrown out there for shadowar is some bit of fokelore or what have you that feels pulled from an anime or other japaneese themed thing. Kitsoune, Ogres, kappa, whatever have you.

Whoa. Let's be fair here. All we really know is that she's a fox spirit. To automaticaly assume they're pulling it from the kitsune is leaping to conclusions that really are unfair to the winner. Just because the kitsune is the most popular version out there right now, due to anime's popularity, doesnt necessarily mean it's going to BE a Kitsune. There's a world of difference between the Japanese kitsune, the Korean Kumiho, and the Chinese Huli Jing, even though all three are fox spirits. Let's at least get the characters bio first before we start talking about originality.

I thought Hu Li Jing was just another way of calling a woman sly and mischevious usually in a sexual manner. Want to fill me in on the Chinese fox spirit story then? :)

i dunno when i think Kitsune i think this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Da_Ji but i dunno, i agree shadowar should cover ALL cultures not just ancient Asian mythology, but we did have some Norse and Egyptian so far in the game. If i was to guess i'm gonna bet that Steve will post up a SOTG either Friday or Monday so BE PATIENT EVERYONE...

N.J.

At this point I'm not even interested in the August SotG. It's gonna be all about an event I'm probably not going to go to ever.

Deadliest Warrior is rubbish. They use their computer to set things up in a "fair" way. Ninjas do NOT fight fair; any Ninja would just hide from the Spartan, and either shoot with the blow gun for the kill, or swiftly slice at the jugular with his ninjato.

Or the way that gladiators apparently use the weapons from each of the 4ish completely disparate styles (the trident was only ever accompanied by a net and extremely light armor, for example) at once.

They also decided knight>pirate because pirates can't effectively pierce the knight's armor. Only, knights can only chase people if they have a horse to ride, so the pirate just has to run through some underbrush or onto a boat and tire the knight out until he dehydrates into hallucination.

ANYWAY

@fred: IIRC it was pretty much just peasants ruled by the Orthodox Church and tsars. You could have Rasputin, though >:3

...So...when I go to Hong Kong...

use that as a pickup line? =D

the idea is basically a sort of alternate history timeline where every major empire happens at once (so where's Alexander the Great coming down on everyone else hurling Zeus' lightning bolts or something... oh wait he's the late-emerging game boss that's about to conquer everyone so the Covenant and Order have to work together to overthrow his tyranny... spoilers? :P )

Every BRONZE AGE empire, going to start of Iron with vikings. So no knights, non-viking pirates, or whatever else.

Hell if you want to be technical about it no samurais either.

Bronze Age, eh. brb wikipedia

It'd be cool if we had something out of the Indus Valley, not much history to base it on if I remember my high school history tho :

Maybe we can get a minotaur (with a raging boner)

Heh.

Then again, it's really all at the discretion of Steve.

Another interesting place to pull ideas from for Shadowar is from Sumerian Mythology. A Gilgamesh type character would come to mind.

As for what is wrong and right about spirits and stuff, Steve gave us enought source material for that competition. Spirits play a role in Shadowar or need I remind you guys of the story being told by Lu Chen's guess or rather a story he was telling until she interupt him. Seriosly, we have the stories to back it up...read them.

I'm surprised that's not already in, to be honest.

It could be, we haven't seen all the SW characters.

Yeah, it is not a perfect show, (It doesn't take training or tactics into account, for example) but it does demonstrate some interesting points. The thing I like is showing the superiority of European armor (katana can't cut chain mail, for example). However, the samurai would go for unarmored parts (which wouldn't be accounted for).

OT: what eras are they going for for ShadoWar? Haven't had time to read much of the backstory.

They said no plate mail, no low medieval-era weaponry, and obviously no guns.

So I'm guessing from bronze age to beginning of iron age.

OK. Thanks! That is interesting considering that SoulCalibur features medieval-era weaponry (both east and west) and plate armor!

Hell, Soul Calibur has Guns.

Cervantes has a pistol, and Mitsurugi is on a quest to defeat the rifle. (;

Also don't forget Fio's Machine gun...

There's plenty of other instances of gun powder weaponry as well (A New Low and Explosive Earrings for example)
