The Guardian Mantis

By Wondergecko, in X-Wing

Well, since a lot of folks (myself included) seem to think that the Scurrg H-6 (Havoc) is a lock for X-wing, given its recent appearance in Armada, I'm curious what y'all think about another offering from Starfighter: the Guardian Mantis.

The Guardian Mantis would give us a ship with a missile slot, cloaking device, and an Astromech! It's also not too bad looking. So, thoughts?

I suppose. But I'm not entirely sure why we'd need it. To be perfectly honest, I kinda' like The Empire having cloaking as their own truly unique thing.

Not really blowing up my skirt.

This line from your wiki link sounds cool:

"<...>and a unique ion encumbrance system . This system launched small ion-enabled "tags", projectiles which attached to enemy vessels and caused an ionization effect which disabled their deflector shields "

I think it could work in X-wing system, leaving a ship without shields for a round...

Could be neat, but does it fit in the X-Wing timeline (Rebellion era going forward)? Wookieepedia says this one is from the Rise of the Empire.

Not fanboying it, by the way, just offering it up. That being said, I actually do like the look, and it was a joy to fly.

As for the timeline, if the Havoc's in, so is this; they're contemporaries. (And, of course, so is the Z-95, Y-wing, blah, blah, everything's ancient, etc.)

That's the best point to make here. If the Scurrg actually does get in, pretty much anything from the Prequel Era is fair game.

I don't see why prequel ships couldn't be included, specifically for S&V. Mercenaries, pirates, smugglers would most likely have older ships that they are keeping patched together. I would imagine they are going to add more cloaked ships too. The Stygium Particle Accelerator doesn't specify a ship or faction.

Psst...everything from the Prequel Era is already fair game.

Well yeah, but every time that point can be hammered in further is a time I'm quite happy.

I agree on Empire should keep cloaking as a unique ability. I like that Mantis thingy though. I looks like a beefy mecha upper body with a tiny R2 head.

Now, that's a scary thought. Little Ani in his N-1 will have free barrel rolls, because spinning is a good trick.

I really want not to like it, but... it's growing on me pretty quickly.

It's entirely possible that FFG will introduce, or already has introduced, ships and characters that were strictly from before the Rebellion Era. I'd be interested to know what they are. I'm just going by what was stated for the X-Wing timeline by (I believe it was) Chris Petersen.

i hope it looks better than the image

from the angle and the texture quality, it looks like we're going to get a super-crucified-Jesus starfighter with a really tiny r2-d2 head

Is the "stealth mode" mentioned in the Wookieepedia entry actually a reference to a cloaking device, or could it be more of a run-quiet sort of thing?

GG B and E wings if that's a thing.

of they could be "ion mines" that act like prox mines with Ion instead of damage

I remember blowing these up in Star Wars: Starfighter (I think).

It's a great design, feels very Star Wars and I think it would be a great missile/Astromech platform for Scum.

I would ask after how in the **** they're supposed to land, but if the B-wing is any indication then any starwars ship can manage :P

I don't particularly care for that image of it. If we do get another prequel era ship, I want it to be the Naboo N-1. I would love to see a rusted-out bucket of an N-1 in the scum and villainy faction. Or, you could throw it in there for the rebels, that could work too, as Naboo supposedly supported the rebellion. Either way. The mantis looks better in some of the other pics I've seen of it, but it just doesn't do anything for me that other ships don't do better.

It would be a great 2 agility missile platform with access to Unhinged Astros, Systems and an Illicit Upgrade slot. I'm pretty sure there's currently no ship that could fill that role that this one could fill handily.

I'd give the N-1 3 agility. Pretty much the A-wing stat line, or thereabouts.

FFG is going to pull more from the future than the past I think. Episode 7 and Rebels ships are however a certainty at this point.

FFG has years on their papers now, and they could do anything... it is all very interesting.

:)

I was talking about the Mantis. Apologies for my lack of specification.

The N-1, as much as I actually like the design (contrary to the popular disdain for it), would be exemely hard for me to incorporate into X-Wing unless it were in a 4th faction like "Sovereign States and Civilians", and I can already sense WonderWAAAGH groaning at the thought or possibility of that even happening. Even if Naboo was a Rebel sympathizer state, I doubt a government that put so much money into their uniquely and aesthetically designed star fighters would be like "Oh hey, feel free to use em, you know, these giant symbols of Naboo, to fight the Empire. Yep. Not like they're gonna know where they came from so they totally won't zap us."

Not saying I don't want it in X-Wing, just saying it would be weird to shoehorn it into Rebels or Scum factions when those fighters were hard to come by.
