DOOM-type movies

By Interceptor2, in Doom

Anyone have suggestions on movies that are similar in plot and atmosphere to Doom the computer games (besides the Doom movie itself of course)?

My picks are:

  • Alien and Aliens: Marines verses evil monsters...it's a given. Excellent movies with awesome, scary visuals.
  • Ghosts of Mars: A John Carpenter film that I'm certain was inspired on some level by Doom. C'mon...it takes place on Mars and an ancient, alien, evil force is awakened in a mine. The colonists are possessed by this evil presence, turning them into demonic, self-mutilating cannibals. Great flick. And, it has Natasha Henstridge...Rrrrrrr!
  • The Thing: A 50s sci-fi classic, re-made (quite well in my opinion) by John Carpenter. Group of scientists stuck in an arctic base during a terrible blizzard. A crash landed alien stalks the scientists through the arctic corridors.
  • 30 Days of Night: Okay, anyone else pissed off at the gaylord Twilight movie...vegeterian, baseball playing vampires? Get serious. 30 Days of Night did vampires right. The vamps in this flick were different, but totally brutal and badass monsters...as vampires should be! The theme of survivors being stalked by bloodthirsty fiends through an isolated, rugged environment...pure Doom!
  • Event Horizion: Heck yes! It's almost the plot of the Doom games itself, except it takes place on a research vessel orbiting Neptune. An experimental hyper-drive of sorts opens a gateway to hell. As usual, the crew becomes possessed and tries to eat each other.

I can think of plenty more movies in this genre, but I'll let others offer their own input. These movies provide some great inspiration for Doom scenarios.

It might be a little far-fetched, but Total Recall might be a candidate for your list, even though the marine / evil invaders aspect is missing. gran_risa.gif

(yeah, I know it's a little racist that the only black mutant is the traitor, but otherwise a great classic)

Sunshine had /some/ elements, the mysterious horror-space movie. Kind of like the first Alien film.

I was kind of hoping I Am Legend would be Doom-ish, but that turned out to be a dissappointment.

Starship Troopers isn't bad, for that gung-ho squad killing creatures movie. (definately a popcorn flick)

I would probably put Predator in a Doom-feeling movie group too.

Resident Evils and Pitch Black have good atmosphere.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head...

Yes, Sunshine was very cool. Also, Resident Evil, especially the first one, was very, very Doom-like. As to I am Legend...I had high hopes for this movie, too, but was very disappointed. The first hour of this movie rocked, and was very Doom-like. The movie went downhill during the second hour, however. I was not a big fan of the Doom movie...I wish someone would do a Doom movie that was true to the videogames. I recently saw Quarentine...really good zombie flick, with some very Doom-type elements in it. I'm not a big fan of these movies that are filmed like reality TV, but this one was not bad...the ending was genuinely creepy...much more satisfying than I am Legend.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Stephen King's The Mist. It doesn't exactly capture a FPS vibe, but the basic back story is just the same as Doom.

I really liked The Mist, thought it was a great horror movie that left most to your imagination. But, I wouldn't put it in a "doom-like" list of movies. Doom is about cramped corridors with shotguns killing demons, not really what The Mist was about...

Yeah, The Mist was a really creepy movie. The part with the spider creatures was really Doom-like...kind of like trites and ticks. Hey, anyone seen the previews for the new sci-fi flick, Pandorum? Looks very Doom-esque to me.

Also, lately I've been playing an awesome game from Flying Frog Productions titled Last Night on Earth. Check it out on their website. It's freakin' awesome. It's similar to Doom in some ways. It's a fight off the zombies game that has some great game mechanics, miniatures, and multiple scenarios, as well as tons of options for personal customization. Speaking of zombies...anyone seen the previews for Zombieland ? Looks pretty cool.

Right. The Mist isn't the same as far as the action goes, only in the basic plot device. So instead of researchers making a mistake on the Mars colony in the far future and opening an interdimensional rift, they open one here on Earth. And I don't recall if the rift in Doom ever let as big a creature through as the one in the Mist...

Oh, and the book came out 13 years before that video game. Hmmm...

I've seen a preview for an upcoming movie called, "Pandorum." I don't usually go to see movies in the theatre anymore because they're expensive and clichéd... but this one looked alluring. Humanoid creatures described as "evil" stalking people in what looks like a claustrophobic research station? You can sign me up.

Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a spacecraft. It's pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the spacecraft. They can't remember anything - who are they, what is their mission? The only way out of the chamber is a dark and narrow airshaft.

Corporal Bower, the younger of the two, crawls inside, while the other, Lt. Payton, stays behind for guidance on a radio transmitter. As Bower ventures deeper and deeper into the ship, he discovers that he and Payton are not alone. Slowly the spacecraft's shocking and deadly secrets come unravelled, and the astronauts realize that the survival of mankind hinges on their actions.

Right up my alley.

Heh Tibs, that movie just BEGS to have a Doom campaign based on it.
