OL and surges

By Anselmus, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi there,

I just read through the GLoAQ where I found this:

Threat and Surges
Do the surges used to generate Threat for an Overlord get spent, or can they be used to activate effects? eg, the OL rolls 3 surges and has the option to use 1 Surge for 1 damage. Can the OL gather 1 Threat and +3 Damage, or only 1 Threat and +1 Damage? Clarified: Can surges used for Threat also be used for abilities?

How can the OL use surges for damage appart from dark prayer and RtL outdoor encounters? Did I miss anything in the past 4 years? =(

Possibly the poster was thinking of a Dark Charmed attack. It doesn't really matter - it is a rhetorical question dealing with methodology rather than specific effects.

What if, for example the Hero has "Deflect"? (Other - Rune - You gain Fear 1 )

You can only use each rolled surge once for a single purpose. So if you roll 2 surges you can either OR overcome the fear and have no Threat (as you only have 1 left), OR take the threat but have your attack fail.
Opposed to when rolling 3 surges, you can do/have both, spending/using all 3 surges.

Actually, the OLcan't use surges to gain threat if the attack fails anyway.. so this is moot.

But who says that the attack fails? If you roll 3 surges, you have the ability to overcome the Fear effect. And you still have 2 surges left to claim 1 threat.

Btw, the rules state that " Using Power Surges (Overlord): The overlord player may spend two surges to gain one threat token. Any unused surges are lost."
But on the other hand, it also states that when a miss is rolled, the attack automatically fails (although nothing is then mentioned about surges that might be spent on Threat in this matter)

Q: Under what circumstances can the overlord receive threat for rolling surges on an attack roll?
A: The overlord may spend two surges on each attack roll to gain one threat. He may do this on any attack that hits a hero. This represents a change from previous FAQ rulings on this subject.

You actually have to hit a hero with a successful attack to gain threat.

Sorry.. it was the "OR take the threat but have your attack fail" I was trying to highlight... stupid editor!

One other way surges can be used is specific to the Bash attack.
