I used to hate the UFS off-season.

By Homme Chapeau, in UFS General Discussion

Until this tournament season.

There is nothing, I do repeat, nothing going on. It is like a void. There's so few people posting that even my posts have dwindled. It's like there's so much people concentrated on Worlds that nothing's going on.

Look I know Gen Con is important but that's no reason that the people that AREN'T going (or am I and my playgroup the only one that's not going and that honestly does not care?) can't post new content. I'd contribute but generally my contributions are reactive - I can't do much if there's nothing going on, and right now I cannot stress this enough there is nothing going on .

Usually we have a ton of complaints about cards that should be banned by now. Is it because the Tekken set isn't out yet? Or because they hammered every single card that warranted complaints?

I'd love to care more about this game, but you're making this difficult guys.

To be honest, as people enter and leave the game, the number of long-time players obviously dwindles. Newer players may not know what to say or even be on the boards that often. Then there's also people who are just watchers. Then you've got people who don't post anymore because of trolls or a lack of open-mindedness when some things are mentioned. I stopped posting for about a year, when it started getting ridiculous towards the final days of the STG forums.

I've seen people try new threads only to be replied to with, "that's dumb" or "there's already been a thread about this". Well, there's only so many things under the sun.

But yes, I agree, the posts have decreased. We're all getting older (naturally) so more and more life and responsibilities take priority as opposed to when we were kids and used to be able to surf the internet whenever we weren't in school. As you said, once the new set comes out and World's is in full swing, we'll see much more posting. If there's two things people like to post about in any medium, it's complaints and bragging. gran_risa.gif

Well, mate, what is it you'd actually want to talk about? How much people complain on here about cards or eachother? How we haven't had anything exciting happen for months? How negative the forums have become even when people are talking?

The fact of the matter is that people on these forums are extremely negative about everything and always have been. It is difficult to want to write positive anything on here, as most of the time, it gets ignored in favour of the next argument thats happening. It makes you wonder why people come on here in the first place, and this is coming from one of the more positive players in the community.

Well, with FFG missing a release this year, there really is less to talk about. Plus attendance this year for Worlds is probably gonna be even less than last year. Last year it was because of all the "Qualifying" BS and the stale environment, this year it will be because the move to FFG finally hit us hard and now we have less cards in the environment, so most people know what to expect. Yes the banning were a very big, sweeping change for the game, and it was at least 1 step in the right direction, but after a few steps backwards over the past year, I'm not even sure we are back to where we started.

But the hope is that the "Off-Season" after Worlds will be interesting, with FFG rolling out Mini-Block. It'll be a very small, limited card pool, but it will be great when the last release comes out this year in December. . . we hope.

I'm going to vote for Joe here.

While I still post, by and large I've stopped reading many of the threads, and can't be bothered to contribute to most of them because of the negativity.

People aren't interesting in sharing the top decks, so there's no discussion to evolve the meta.

Mix that with the new people who don't want to post because of all the trolling that happens unabaited on the forums, and this is overall an unwelcoming place that does little to nothing to help grow the game.

I'll bump my older thread, in the hopes people actually post this time

but seriously, wtf? Bannings aren't exactly "fresh" anymore; I want to hear about how the game is doing!

ANYTHING. So long as it's something new that I can contribute in. I remember last year I posted like MAD in these forums at work. Now I barely check them once per day. The only time a new topic is being created is a new player coming in (yay!) or news of a store that stopped carrying the game (boo!). What can I say other than : "Well good for you it is a fun game especially now you couldn't have joined at a better time." or "That sucks." I can't help new players - Any advice I would give would be immediately discarded (as well it should, I'm not exactly a great player). I can't exactly convince store owners to pick up the product now anyway.

The only good new discussion that's been around is how decking out the opponent is an awesome strategy now and since I absolutely suck at it it's not like I can personally contribute. Props to 'goth's legacy no block format, though.

It's not even the negativity that gets me - After all I'm still here long after I thought I wouldn't be, but the inaction. There are zero things going on. I don't want to blame FFG because I've been there before and it didn't exactly do much. I'd say it's the forum posters fault just as much as it is not ("Hey look a negative thread we'll bury it with NEGATIVITY~!" Great strategy guys!) so it is the forum posters' responsibility to think up of new things to discuss or at least, if they've only got negativity, to leave the tentative hope in Pandora's box, so to speak (In example : I don't know maybe not being insulting, both sides of the fence? Or at least attack the view and not the viewer?)

And if we REALLY have sunk to the bottom of the barrel, and there is literally nothing new under the sun to discuss? I weep.

People, I don't think you realize the predicament I am in. I AM STARTING TO MISS THE INCESSANT THREADS ABOUT THE PODCAST. ME. Yes it is that bad.

Thanks! It's fun as hell. I cannot stress enough just how smashtacular it is.

And while I created the thread to share with the masses - I have to give props to my players who really brainstomed the idea.

The bigest thing that has slowed down discussion is the lack of a new set in a while.

This, coupled with the fact that the set 12 release (although a great set) doesn't exactly go that well with the block 3 stuff before it - i.e. very few cards of the new stuff sees competitive play. Granted a lot of it will come block rotation.

In other words, the game is going in a new direction block 4, and one that a lot of players are looking forward to. But that is just it, until that rotation happens we aren't seeing any major changes to the block 3 meta (becuase the block 4 cards aren't being used together with them that much) and yet that is what 'most' people are concerned with until 3 weeks time and the finish of the worlds competition.

Not surprising, and a little of what Goth says is true too. With all of the bannings being made there is a 'changed' meta out there, and a lot of players don't want to talk about what works and what doesn't becuase knowing this is one up on others before the 'big show'.

when we had events (i think we have no more ufs events; didn't asked the guy) we kinda have that kind of decks, but still, i always saw the same cards/decks over and over and over. kinda killed the mood to build one and played block 3 decks ainsted. for the lulz.

For me, no news is good news.

We have SoCal Regionals next Saturday. I'm a bit worried that the turnout will be smaller than I'd hoped, and I want to make sure our store gets a return on their $150 investment in the regionals pack.

But last Tuesday's tourney had 10 people, and I know we'll have some folks coming in from other playgroups.

Moreover, every tourney we've had in the last month at Gameology has been fun. I've seen some really creative decks doing really interesting things. I got killed by a Spike deck at the last one, but it was Felicia, so I actually enjoyed it (and I might have won through some smarter playing).

We always see a variety of interesting decks, and I'm enjoying the game now as much as I ever have. And I think the Shadowar cards are my favorite, even though I got into this game originally for properties I knew (Penny Arcade, SoulCalibur, StreetFighter).

The one downer right now is that our store has no new product, and their distributor's been sold out for quite a while.

I'm not talking about FFG. I've done my share of bitching about the company. I am talking about the players themselves. Again, my contributions are reactive because I feed off of you guys, but seriously I don't like not contributing which is why I either want the people posting here just leaving a mark that we can all discuss or more people to join in if they want to.

We don't bite or at least I know those guys don't.

Ease off on your sarcasm. Honestly... there's been a few of your posts lately that have been so sarcastic that if this was the old forums, you would have crossed the line.

There is no "would have". There is only "did" and "did not". I obviously did (I tend to do that, and especially lately on all forums, not just this one), but for some reason didn't get smacked.

Also, recent posts? Me? Uh what?

FFG doesn't actually do much on the forums, unless someone is so far over the line. They won't tend to call anyone on anything.

There was one or two of your posts recently that I looked at and went "WTF" when I saw them because they just seemed so negative/sarcastic/derailing

No need to pull examples. I just didn't think I posted that much.

Worlds is not the big show. No Foily means the champ will SUCK. Yeah your picture is on it, but it will just get lost in a pile of Commons somewhere.

Previous years I have considered flying over (and a contingent of NZ players did once) but even with a more open meta I cannot be shagged to fly to the states to play 4 people for a Common "Best prize in gaming".

I'll happily be a non-foily champ card. Immortality is still immortality.

I'd also happily be a non-foily champ card. It means I won't bend due to humidity.

Also, it'd piss off so many people if Hatman was champ that it'd be funny to see.
