The Charnel God

By Dr Bloodmoney, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Question from a new (ish) player,

Do any of the expansions have a great old one card for Mordiggian the charnel god?

Thanks in advance!

Nope, sorry. No charnal god offically, but there might be a fan created one around on the forums.

Ah well, thanks anyway, looks like I'll have to make my own! -Mordiggan was always my favourite from the Clark Aston Smith side of things!

Hey Doc (I'm not gonna say "what's up", no worries). Could you tell us more about this god ? I'm pretty sure I haven't found him in any book, but I wouldn't want to make a mistake and say it is not lovecraftian, so... what is it ? Thanks !

Bear with me, I'm going to go all pulp horror geek on you : Well he's not an invention of Lovecraft's directly but of Clark Ashton Smith, and along with Robert E Howards stuff, they use to cross over names and references between the cosmic horror and dark fantasy stuff between each other all the time. Mordiggan is most directly referenced in CAS's short story The Charnel God as a devouring darkness dweling in a city run by a masked priesthood of ghouls who serve him and enact a tithe of taking the city's dead to him to be consumed, oh this is at the end of time by the way or in the dreamlands depending on how you take the text :) , but i'm pretty sure he gets a 'namecheck' here and there in other peoples stuff both back in 'the day' (I've an urge to say the names mentioned in Sahdow out of time but i'm not sure) and in more modern fare, and some writers think that the great old one Nyogtha is the same critter.

If you like the Call of Cthulhu rpg at all, Pagan Publishing did a realy quite good game campaign book called Realm of Shadows which was all about combating the Charnal God's ghoul cult in the 1930s, rangeing from New England to the jungles of South America.

Anyway, I always like the image of a 'living darkness' devouring the dead as a great old one :)

Thanks for the explanations mate. I didn't read anything else apart the almost whole of Lovecraft. So I really do know nothing about all this stuff, good explanations then.

I don't know anything about rpg's either, so.... sorry, kind of lame from me I know ! Apart from DnD, In Nomine, Conspiration, Vampire and all that stuff, the big big stuff, I don't know rpgs and never play any. I played one once, made my friend killed in five minutes because I found that funny, but everyone looked at me like, well, shocked rpgs player who see their scenario useless and dead in five minutes, so...

I was gonna use Mordiggian as one of the super-monster heralds in the 'Underground' expansion that some of us were working on. I guess that fan expansion is still an ongoing project, although I don't know if we'll ever finish it.
